I haven't bought a bicycle in about 10 years and I want to start riding for real. I want to know what is a good bike (brand, type, etc.) for a beginner who wants to eventually get into cross country. Also, what should I look at as far as price? Maybe a high, med, low type of scale. If anybody has any real advice, I would definitely take it.

I just purchased a Trek. It was last year's model so I got it for only $350. I went to a pro-bike shop where they stock many types of bikes. They let me test ride and fit it to me. A professional bike shop will work with you and fit you with a bike that actually works for you. Check for bikes that are left over from last year that they are trying to get rid of to make room for the new model year. You can get a good deal that way.

I'm rather tall and the old Target blue light special bike that I had been riding previously just didn't feel right. The new bike is larger, but feels much better.

The Trek bike that I selected is a hybrid which is something of a cross between a mountian bike and a street bike. It has front shocks and another shock on the seat stem. The tires aren't quite as fat as a mountain bike, but they aren't the super narrow street bike size either. This was important to me since my route to work has some fairly rough areas.

I've been using my bike to commute to work (about a hour of biking a day). My work provides a locker room and showers. I put a good rack on the back of the bike and purchased a commuter bag from Two Wheel Gear:

The bag is worth checking out, it is very practical for those of us who are biking to work and back.

Honestly, if you go to a good bike shop (not Wal Mart or anything like that)- a shop that specializes in all types of bicycles, the people who work there know EVERYTHING about bikes and what they do and what bike is best for certain activities and people. They will set you up with what is best for you, like what kind of biking and your price range and making sure it fits properly and everything. Personally, I have a Giant and I love it. It;s a hybrid (good for road and crosscountry-but not rough crosscountry and not intense roadbiking) and costed around $900 which is probably high in price but also high in quality. Lower prices of still good quality (hybrid) bikes are around 4-500. But definatley check out a bike shop, like I said the guys there know everything.

Gary Fisher, Specialized, Giant, Kona, Trek...There's lots of good names and a wide variety of prices from the $100 CCM's at Walmart to $5000 Cannondales and Brody's. Get thee to a reputable bike shop and they'll hook you up.

You might want Trek, Speedy, or JONNY. In a few places they have Nike And/ or Jansport. Good luck! Don't fall!

Trek: 150-500
Speedy + JONNY: 200-750
Nike +Jansport: 199-1000
