I personally don't have one yet.But I've been shopping around..
A friend gave me some tips to look for .Here they are:

look for optical zoom capability over digital zoom.

The higher the megapixel the better

Look for camera that will accept regular batteries as well as rechargeable ones.

The more buttons and whistles the more complicated to use.

Cannon and Kodak are respected brands

Brand: Go for Canon or Nikon. Canon is the leader.

If you want to shoot good quality pictures even compact digicams can be of help. But if you definitely want to experiment with the various controls and want top notch quality then you have to go for a SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera. Here you can change the lenses.

Resolution is another important variable. A camera upto 5 Mega pixels will suffice if you are printing upto 5x8 inches.

If you are a serious amateur then you should look for a camera which can shoot in Raw mode for better controls. You can then convert the raw files into tiff or jpeg.

If you are looking at a compact digital camera, then you have to look at the attached zoom. don't get swayed by the digital zoom. Look for a good range of optical zoom.

i would definitely recommend a Nikon or Canon. They both produce very good qualities, and are usually the first in updated technology. I know more about Canons though. There are multiple factors that go into buying a camera..it really depends on what you like and what you want. my suggestions are:

1) Rechargable batteries (NOT rechargable AA batteries...they are heavier and bulkier)

2) Shutter Speed. Fast shutter speed will reduce the blurriness in a picture.

3) megapixels. I recommend having at least 4 megapixels...so that when you blow up picture, it will be more clear. basically, this just means that number of dots in a picture.

4) 2.5 LCD Lens. Bigger, clearer picture upon taking it

5) size of camera for convenience

6) Flash...indoor quality pictures

Honestly..i think any of the Nikons or Canons are very good. I would suggest the Canon SD series (Canon SD600), it comes in at around $250. As in any consumer electronics, take a look at the reports. I usually read the Amazon.com...skim over the company's report, and really pore over the customer's reviews..they have both cons and pros. Then after some research in which camera works for you..i would try looking at the LA Times Sunday Ads (Office Depot, Staples, Office Max, etc)...they often offer pretty good deals..i.e. included with a memory card. Hope this helps =) goood luck finding a camera.

If you're thinking of having one for all around and light travel type uses, one that fits in your pocket is best. can't recommend brand. they're many brads out there. the other thing is who good a quality camera do you need to your satisfaction. For best picture product with portable ones 2.5 mega pixels or more will do a great job. If you're really into taking quality pictures you have to spend some money. Any thing with 4 meag pixels and above will give you high qualities. You also should look at they kind of insertable memory cards. Get a camera with memory cards that universally can be used on your computer or any other things that uses memory cards. This means shopping around for camera with affordable price that uses memory card that is universal. Some brands just came to mind are Fuji, Canon, Kodak, and olympus.

All of the above is good information, but the most important factor is to be sure that the camera is suited to your abilities and to your needs.

I know that this may sound like a vague answer, but before you make your final purchase, you need to do some personal research and decide just what you want to do with your camera and then it will be easier to narrow down your choices.

This includes asking for advice in this section. If you know some more specific things, please post another question saying something like, "I want a compact digital camera that would be good for taking travel photos as well as the occasional picture of my grandchildren," or, "I really want to learn about photography and I am looking for suggestions for a camera that I won't outgrow in a few months." Stuff like that will make it easier for us to give you more guidance.

If you are just a "snap shot" user, then any of the less expensive view finder type will do. For serious work you need to go to at least a moderately priced DSLR. Pentax has several models in the under a grand price range that are every bit (if not better) as good as any of the "pay-for-the-name" brands (Cannon, Nikon and Olympus) and I just got one a few weeks ago for $599 (with a 18 x 55 lens) with a $100. mail in rebate. It came out in June 05. They came out with an up-grade in Jan 06 and another model in June 06. All about the same thing, but now selling for $799 and no rebate.

Mainly you will want to look at the megapixels. And next is the brand of the camera Nikkon, Cannon, Samsung,Wolf. Look if it can record as well, becuase cameras that can record are handy. Remeber pricing is the most trick part. Getting a camera for a good price as opposed to be taking for a cleaning is the difference. I recommend Cannon,Nikon, or Wolf

One of the main things you want is alot of optical zoom, Cannon has a camera with 4x optical zoom ($200-$300 has alot of nice different shooting modes, or if you are like me you might want a camera with 12 optical zoom the cannon has alot of different shooting modes. But it is very bulky. That camera runs about $400. If you want a very good camera you could get a digital slr, bulky but amazing quality. Prices vary from $700 up.
