Adopted a Hurricane Katrina Dog, don't know anything about him, except he is probably about 7 years old. Can older dogs learn new habits easily, like not to beg for food, or rummage through garbage, when he has probably did it for survival after the hurricane?

First of all, that's great that you adopted a dog from those curcumstances! In answer to your question, you can teach any aged dog new tricks. Older dogs are hard, but I taught my 5 year old dog, my 10 year old dog, and my 14 year old dog to do several new things. I also taught them not to do things like begging and digging in the trash. Trying going to a pet training center and enrolling yourselves there. Try PetSmart, they're not that expensive and they're good. Good Luck and have fun!!

Yes, an older dog can learn. They are a little more set in their ways than a young dog and need to be trained with lots of love and patience. Introduce new things slowly and give lots of praise and encouragement. Remember, he has been through a trauma and may need extra atention or even to be re taught basic commands and manners.

Good luck with your new family member. He is lucky to have a loving, new home where he can live out the rest of his years in comfort and security.

I would invest in Dr. Ian Dunbar's book...'teach a new dog old tricks". An older dog is just as cabable at learning as another dog. You may have to work a little harder for the sole reason that any naughty behavior already learned will have to be 'rewired'. many older dogs enjoy the mental stimulation that training offers. always find a training person that offers a reward based approach. it's easier for you and considerably more fun for your dog

Yes, they can, and God bless you!!!! . I live in Oklahoma but I am from Louisiana and I spent some time at the rescue site in Baton Rouge. Heart breaking, but what a thrill it was every time that big bell rang telling us that another owner was reunited with their pet!!!! You will be amazed at quickly your new pet learns. Usually animals who have been through such horrible situations are so greatful for someone to love them and feed them on a regular basis, they will do most anything to please you once they know this is a forever deal!!!! Once again, thank you and God bless you and your new friend!

I think a dog can learn new tricks, you just have to take your time and teach the dog. Have good treats there for when he or she does good.
