Take her to a shelter... some people only want to adopt old dogs...With an older dog you're getting an animal that is much quieter and not as active. There is also the feeling that you're saving an animal that might not be adopted, and there isn't quite the same commitment that there is with a puppy that is going to live for at least 10 or more years. I will never get another dog younger than 8 or 9.

If there is really nowhere else she can go, then just use the method I was raised with.
Give her a bowl of her favourite food, a big plate of raw kangaroo or something. Give her a big hug. Keep the gun behind your back so she can't see it. Wait til she's started eating.
Two in the back of the head over a bowl of her favourite food. She won't know it ever happened.
If this is really the only option you have, then I congratulate you on your selflessness. Sometimes the kindest thing to do is to let your dog go, peacefully, quickly and at home. But if you can't get a gun, then take her to a vet to get dropped. It costs but it is for the best. Shooting's the only way to do it at home.

Don't kill her. Find someone to take her in and love her for the rest of her days. A friend maybe, a co-worker? Or takke her to a shelter or a rescue. There are a lot of people who love older dogs and will give them a wonderful home.

I'm so sorry you can't keep her. Try taking her to a no-kill shelter. If they won't take her, or if she has any helath issues that would make her sick or have her suffer, it might be time to put it down. It isn't painful at all for the dogs. I had to put down my two 14 year old babys, and although it was so incredibly hard, they didn't suffer at all. Good luck, and I hoped this helped.

If your dog is in good health, consider a local shelter or rescue. There are many people who would be willing to adopt an older dog. She at least deserves the chance. If she is in poor condition a vet appointment may be in order.

I'll take her and give her a caring home. So she can live out her life respectfully. I have a 13y/o dog and I know how you feel. I wouldn't even care how far I have to travel. A dog that old should be given some kind of respect. Email me...I'm serious.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't leave your dog to starve and be a stray dog. Take your dog to your local animal shelter or pound. That way it can be fed or if the vet decides, they will euthanize it. Just don't leave it behind to die or like you say survive for herself. All shelters will take any dog.
If you love your dog as much as you say, in your heart you will know the right thing to do. I know its sounds cheezie, explain to your dog whats going on and why you have to leave her where ever you decide to take her.
When I leave the house, I have to tell my puppie bye for her to stay away from the door and not wait there for me all day . She understands bye and that I will be back but I'm leaving her for the time being.
Sorry I shared so much, good luck to your future.

You should kill your dog!
Your dog has follow you for so many years
don't you think killing that dog will make you pain in the heart?
Just take in the pound or shelter they will take the dog with care
and maybe one day a kind soul will adopt it and love it
Don't let it be a stray dog and don't let it starved to it's death.....

I feel for you I had to put a beloved pet down due to illness and it was like loosing a part of me, anyway, if there truely is not anyone or anywhere to give her a peaceful remainder of her life then have her put down professionaly and hold her and love her as long as you can.
