B Batteries were common up until the Mid 1970's .

They were used in earlier Radio gear to power the Anode circuit ( Mostly in Valve/Tube radios ) They were Also Called H.T. Batteries.

The early battery operated small voltage tube type radios used an A and a B battery. The A battery supplied filament voltage and the B was used for plate voltage. There just is no market for them for some years now, but there is a market for batteries of all kinds of other things from riding mowers to bugler alarms and so finding a battery of a given voltage is no where near the problem today that it was just a few years back.
