I want to start babysitting and I'm thinking about handing my cards out at my church. I'm 11 and next month i'm taking a babysitter course at red cross. Any tips?

I let my 13 yo babysit sometimes, but I am always at home to make sure that she has a backup, or if I cannot be home I ask another adult in the neighborhood that I trust to be a back up for her - that way if there are any disciplinary problems or emergencies she is not on her own. My daughter put together a 'babysitter's bag, it contains crayons, coloring books a couple of different age level storybooks, a movie, a couple of hand puppets, a game and a toy- things that a child might already have but someone else's is always neater- she pulls these out when boredom sets in or a change is needed- if you babysit for the same people a lot, you might want to change the items in your bag every once in a while. (always get parental approval for any movie you might bring, no matter the rating before letting the child watch it)
American Girl has a great book / kit for babysitters- it gives a lot of good information and tips.

It is great that you are taking a first aid class- this is essential and many young girls desire to babysit but don't think about the importance of this.
Always remember to keep yourself safe- it is better to get your parents to drive you to and from the home where you are babysitting unless it is someone you have spent time with and know and trust. You should also never answer the phone or door if you are babysitting in another's home.
you will probably hear all of these tips at your class.

You should hand out the cards after you take the babysitting course...most parents would feel better after that, and most parents prefer a babysitter who has taken the course....you also have to sound mature and responsible on the card, so they can trust you....

Hi there.. While it's a good idea to start looking for kids to babysit at your church ( you picked the best place to look ) I don't think you're going to get many calls. I babysat for years, and now I have my own children, and I don't think that I would allow an 11 year old to babysit.

I know that you may be mature for your age, and you may be smart.. but I know that as a mother, I would not allow my children to be babysat by someone so young.

I'm sorry that I couldn't offer you any helpful tips.

Take the course first, and you legally have to be 12. I suggest babysitting older children because young ones can be a huge responsibility

Try handing the cards out, you can also request that the children come to your house where there is a parent there...just in case you need a little help. That usually works, just don't let your parents do all the work. you are getting paid for this job not them.

If the kid(s) are being bad, remind them that you will be giving a report to their parents.
