Do you know why your dog is growling? Is it a dominance error (the dog believes to be dominant) or is the dog afraid of you and growling to try to keep you away? If its a dominance error, it is best to try to make sure that you are consistent with any rules you set and be sure to act like you are dominant. For example, if you take your dog on a walk, be sure that you have the dog in full control before you put the leash on (asking the dog to sit first normally works). As well as when leaving the house make your dog wait as you walk out the door first and then wait again while you shut the door. Do the same when you enter. Make the dog wait while you enter the house, and then wait again while you shut the door. Only once the door is shut do you want to take off the leash. If the dog is not allowed on the furniture, be sure not to ever let him on the furniture. If he is allowed, make sure he knows that you get first dibs on where you sit.
If he is afraid of you, try to be kinder. Make sure he knows that you aren't going to try to strike him or make him nervous.

There are no bad dogs, just bad training or bad owners (I am not suggesting you are) The first thing you have to do is find out WHY he is growling when you try to touch him. Is he eating, does he have a toy? Are you staring right in his eyes? There are so many possible reasons for a dog to growl at you for touching him that it is hard to give you advice. If you could add details as to what circumstances he is under when you try to touch him, I may be able to offer some insight.

Your dog is not a "bad dog", maybe he just needs a little softer touch right now. Be patient and gentle. Get close to him, but you don't always have to touch him...and when he is sweet to you, give him a doggie treat - positive reinforcement, when he does well. Has he seen a vet in the last year? Maybe he needs a check-up. Good luck!

contrary to most of the answers given so far...the main reason a LITTLE dog will growl is out of fear. maybe not of you specifically but possibly from the unknown. they know they are small and are intimidated easily. many times they lack the confidence a bigger dog has. enlisting your dog in a reward based training program should help not only build his courage and confidence but also help strengthen your relationship too.

You have to show the dog who is in control....be dominent! Now i'm not saying beat the crap out of it--but if it is a little dog it should be easy to demand control of the situation. Never break eye contact---the dog has to know he/she is submissive to you. Good luck!
