for voluntary program for verification of Social Security numbers?

"Ratcliff said her agency is designing a promotional campaign to reach out to employers, especially those in critical facilities such as nuclear power plants, to encourage them to use the federal verification service, which she said has been refined over the years and will soon be more accurate and faster. Currently, 80 percent of employee names, identification documents and Social Security numbers can be validated within a matter of seconds by the online system, she said.

If a name or Social Security number does not check out instantly, the employee is given eight days to respond. Some of these cases turn out to be clerical mistakes, the failure to report a name change, or the failure of an immigrant to report to the Social Security Administration that he or she has become a citizen. Others cases indicate that a person is an illegal worker, she said."

Do you think this is a good thing?

Great information. I strongly support it. But my guess is that most of the real violater industries dont have many volunteers on the list. Id be suprised if there are many Homebuilder companies on that list for example, since they live and die by how many slaves (oops, illegals) they have working. And all of those other manual labor industries that Americans used to be able to get jobs in, until we got this new breed of slaves that are willing to work for $10 a day. Isnt that sad? So many Mexicans are mad at the US for wanting Mexicans to go through the legal immigration process, become citizens, and get paid a living wage for the work they do. How terrible of us! The funny thing is, a lot of those pro-slave people are the same ones that are fighting to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. They arent even smart enough to realize that they are fighting to make a slave class, versus a higher class of American citizens. Its all very sad.

My wife never changed her social security record to reflect her married name. This did not stop her from getting FICA credit over the years, or filing tax returns with that number.

But it did prevent her from renewing her driving license. I had to visit the DMV and bring a copy of our marriage certificate and her birth certificate before they would override the SSAN rejection.

We only found out what the problem really was (the DMV didn't explain it) when we applied for a statement of account from the SSA -- something they now normally send unsolicited based on your tax return addess.

I suspect that "online verification" is likely to be less than meets the eye.

There is also the problem of large numbers of valid but fake numbers issued in the 1970s and before, when no proof of identity, birth or citizenship was required and numbers were normally applied for by mail when a person reached working age. SSANs of that sort, and of people who are dead but whose death was never reported to the SSA, have a certain black-market value.

Yes, but I think the illegal worker should be given a chance to become a citizen. The words illegal worker. Think about it. A person that is willing to work. Just does not seem like that bad of a person.

George Orwell must have known computers were coming. Big Brother is watching you.

They need to change the name of "social securtiy number" to what it really is, National Identification Number.

Yes I do too . I see no harm in this. As far as big brother-we live in dangerous times so steps should be taken. This is not a peaceful time for the world.

I think it's a good thing - one of my former employers volunteered for that and my ssn and name didn't match right away. Turned out to be a typo with the boss at fault, but I'm glad they caught it.
