i want it to read 'save the animals' if a person fluent in french were to read it.

don't use eparnez or economisez, those are completely different meanings of the word save

"Sauvez les animaux" if you're telling someone or everyone to save the animals--as a sentence in itself. "Sauver les animaux" if comes in a sentence, like "Il faut sauver les animaux" or "Je veux sauver les animaux."

Epargner and économiser les animaux means put the animals in your bank account or pay less animals for the same product.
