Start > Run type in msconfig, and select the Startup tab. You can deselect apps that start when your system boots. That will turn them off until you decide to turn back on. If you just want to turn them off temporarily, hold down the CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys to open Windows Task Manager and go to Processes. this will show all the current running processes. Many are needed by Windows many are needed by other programs. Be careful it might take a while to figure out what you need on and what you dont, but you will figure it out..

If you mean when you first start up your computer...

Click Start, click Run, type in MSCONFIG and press OK. Click on the tab that says Startup and uncheck the boxes of the programs you don't want to automatically start.

Unless you're using Windows 2000, go to Start > Run > msconfig and click on the startup tab. Choose what you want to stop from starting up.

And if you are using Windows 2000, Google "Windows 2000 msconfig" and somewhere you'll find someone who uploaded their msconfig from XP. You can just download that and drop open it up and use it in 2000.

Go to Start/Run/ and type in " msconfig " (with out the quotes) and click on the last tab on the right. You will get a drop down page with a bunch of squares on the left with check marks in them. Un-check anything that you don't want to load on start-up,
then re-boot. Then if any of those you want to use, you can turn them on by just clicking on their shortcuts.

Check under options or preferences of each program. There should be an option where you can uncheck the option that says start this program when you start your computer or boot up.

You'll have to do this for every program.
