I have a friend of about a year and a half, he's 19, I'm 16, and I asked him to go to homecoming with me tonight, explaining that I got roped into going and needed a date. He told me he wasn't too keen on the idea of going to a high school dance, and then told me he'd think about it. I have a hunch I just got rejected.

If he ends up saying yes, is it only going to be out of obligation?
And if he says no, do you think he'll be pitying me, thinking I can't get anyone else?

I completely understand him not wanting to go to a high school dance. And I've cut ties with a lot of my male friends because they couldn't understand that I don't want to date them, and those I haven't let go all have girlfriends they're bringing.

Usually when I say "I'll think about it" it's my nice way of saying no, but thats just me. I could understand why he wouldn't want to go to a high school dance, he is 19 and well over the high school age. If he says no, don't be offended, and if he says yes it will probably be because he is doing it for you out of obligation because you are friends (which there isn't anything wrong with). I don't think he would be pitying you, but he would just be doing you a favor, which friends do for eachother.

It could simply mean that he'll think about it.

But look at it this way. You prefaced your request by saying that you got "roped into it" and that you "needed a date." That probably made him sense that you were being desperate & not really that into him personally escorting you to the homecoming. It might have been better if you'd said something such as, "I can't think of anyone else I'd rather have go with me than a friend such as you!" That would have boosted his ego & made him feel pretty special.

But I'd recommend asking him how he really feels. Tell him how YOU really feel. And then just see what happens.

I'm afraid that it really does mean "no".

Plus there's the age difference -- you're technically jailbait now AND I wouldn't want to go to a high school dance at his age either -- and you only asked him because you got "roped into going." How flattering!

Maybe the "roped into going" thing was a defense mechanism on your part ("I'm not asking because I really like you and am afraid of being rejected, it's just that I *have* to go"), but on the whole, I'd say yeah, you got rejected, and your friend either wanted to let you down easy, or didn't have the balls to be straight up with you.

I'm in Sales and when a customer says "I'll think about it" it means "I don't want to say no, I just want to get out of here so you can't make me say yes" - it's a polite way to prolong the inevitable, which is a no

it depends on the person if you knew him for a while then you can say more the any of us. when i say "i'll thin about it" 89% of the time i really mean it ill think about it. but if i say in a way to mean no its b/c i don’t want you to keep asking me over and over again. so your really just have to use your best judgement.
