That's a good question, but I don't see any good answers. I took Bible History in college, so I know more about this than people who are uneducated in such matters. Moses made the Sinai Covenant to worship one god above all others. He called this god Yahweh, often mistransalated as Jehovah. Moses was reared in Egypt and was likely influenced by Ikhnaten the first recorded monotheist. Moses seemed to be a henotheist who believes that many gods exist but worships one above the rest. See the first commandment! A monotheist believes only one god exists, so no such commandment is needed. When Moses was getting the ten commandments, the Hebrews reverted to worship of Apis of Egypt, and Aaron made them a statue of that calf god. Hebrews once worshipped Elohim, and I see that has been revived. There are many contradictioins in the Bible, and this part is a good place to find them. Probably, Hebrews worshipped their Elohim until Moses persuaded them to replace them with his new deity, and their myths, legends, etc, were written or rewritten to agree with all of this. Moses is often credited with writing the early books of the Bible, so he could write it as he liked.

They were the Hebrew people, whose religion, what little we know of it, certainly doesn't compare to the Judiasm practiced today. However- what apparently separated this group was thier belief in one god, rather than idols. But they had none of the documents that forge Judiasm today.
However- there is little to no evidence that the Hebrews were even enslaved in Egypt- although it's quite plausable, as slavery was very common. It's just what you did with the captured society when you won a war- and Egypt was the power center of the day.

Firstly, the Isrealite children became slaves(servants and bondservants) down in Egypt. There still existed Jacobs kinsmen via Esau in Canaan, and the surrounding areas during the parting of the RED SEA. Secondly, before the birth of Moses mother they worshipped one GOD whom Israel taught them to worship! HE was simply called the GOD of Israel! and when greater prominence was important then proclaimed the GOD of our Fathers Abraham and Isaac! also. Thirdly, real Faith comes from GOD not Man! Man created Religion not Faith! So,as to sum up; they were GOD worshippers!

They were enslaved for quite a few years. Not the 400 years as some claim, but for a very long time.
God heard their prayers. So I hope you can take it from there where their faith layed.
Exo 2:23 And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.
Exo 2:24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
