G'day Sher2005,
As an Australian, I think that they are both worth a visit. However, Sydney has got iconic locations such as Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. If you're not scared of heights, the Bridge Climb is worth doing. Sydney also has got great beaches such as Bondi and Manly.
According to Yahoo! Travel, the top 10 attractions in Sydney are:
1. Sydney Opera House Attractions
2. Taronga Zoo Attractions
3. Royal Botanic Gardens Parks, Gardens
4. Sydney Aquarium Attractions
5. Bondi Beach Attractions
6. Balmoral Beach Lakes, Rivers, Canals
7. AMP Tower (Centrepoint) Attractions
8. Rookwood Cemetery Guided Tours
9. Manly Beach Attractions
10. Palm Beach Day Trips
I have attached some sources.
Regards

If you can only see one of the two, then of course you have to see Sydney.
Check out Bondi and Coogee, the Opera House, catch a ferry to Manly, visit the Rocks area.
Melbourne doesn't have anything like those, BUT, if you were staying somewhere for 3 or 6 months, I would recommend Melbourne, because in Melbourne, people actually do cultural stuff - live bands, comedy clubs, great street fairs and markets.
As far as LIVING somewhere, you would have to choose Sydney - Melbourne has no access to proper surf, it's revolting in winter, and revoltingly hot and sticky in Summer, whereas Sydney has nice sea breezes and plenty of winter sun.

Born in Sydney, raised in Melbourne - you can't go wrong visiting either.
Most people do Sydney because it's the thing to do. I prefer Melbourne myself.
