Last Year I stayed at the Empire Hotel, across from the Lincoln Center. It has a nice Lounge on the second floor overlooking the street with big glass windows. Some nights were dead, some a little more lively. I doubt that it's the best but I spent some quiet time there. There are a bunch of small restaurants and cafes across the way to the north. Forgot the street name

I guess it really depends on which part of the city you are interested in. There are so so many nice places to have a drink. There is a beautiful lounge at the Ritz Carlton (Battery Park City)...excellent view with superb drinks. Opia at the Habitat hotel on Lexington & 57th street is a nice sexy lounge with pretty people. For a little hip place, I guess you can always go to Budha Bar @ little 12th street & 10th avenue. So So So many to choose from.......

The bar in the lobby of the Grand Hyatt looks out over 42nd street, is quiet, relatively speaking. Good snacks, strings at cocktail hour.
