Have you tried using "puppy pads" or taking him outside. Maybe he is miserable in the cage and that is his way of saying he wants out since animals don't like to mess where they lay.

Cage? Well, you just answered it! Dogs don't like a cage no more than a person would. Punishment is making the dog fear going to the bathroom where it is supposed to. It should be taken out in the morning, and 15 to 20 minutes after it eats, and make it fun for the dog, going to the bathroom. Allow play afterwards, and praise Praise Praise it! Do this at about the same times everday. And before bedtime. make sure that when the dog eats it supper, that all food is taken away until next day. Leave water down at all times. If you cannot do this right, you need to find a home for this dog that will have the patience for this traning, and not be creul like you are. Once this dog is trained right, you could have a good friend, but this dog is old enough, so you are unable to train this dog, it is something you are doing wrong, did you ask a vet? Get the dog out of that cage! One more thing, cherokeeindian needs her face rubbed in it, not the dog she did it to. That is the worst thing anyone can do, this can cause skin and eye irritations besides being mean. Don't listen t her please. Good Luck

Bichons are one of the most difficult breeds to house train. The #1 reason that they are surrendered into rescue is just what you are describing. Sadly, the literature about Bichons rarely describes how difficult it can be. Many people buy them expecting them to be like other dogs - they are not. They are far too needy of constant human companionship. If you work 8 hours & then have outside interests that keep you away from home, they may just not be a good match for your lifestyle. Contact a Rescue volunteer right away!!! - do a search on-line for a rescue group nearby. Having been long-time Bichon owners, they can give you valuable tips. Probably the first you will hear is that unless you are able to have someone take your Bichon out every few hours (Ex:Ask a senior neighbor nearby to take him out or dogsit), he isn't going to improve. It really isn't his fault! What you are expecting him to do is pure torchure to his body. Until you get him on a consistent, frequent potty schedule, the problems will not go away. If you are determined to make this relationship with your new dog work, seeking assistance from an experienced Bichon Frise owner & getting your little guy on a schedule he can rely on is the imparitive! Good Luck!

If you yell or spank a dog for a mistake he'll never stop doing it. It sounds like you've tried the most common types of training. When that fails you need to take the dog to the vet as there may be an underlying medical reason for the messes. Or the vet may have another solution. It also seems that your dog is trying to tell you that it hates being in the cage. Did the dog come from a shelter or a Puppy mill, she may have been forced to stay in a cage and never allowed to go to the toilet except in his/her cage. That is how puppy mills operate. Be patient and see your vet.

My puppy went through this and I read that he might be this way because he was in a dirty environment before I got him (even though he was only 6 weeks old) .
So I closed him in a small area with a rubber mat on the bottom so I could clean up easy and I gave him fresh sheets to sleep on and a pee pad on the other side and I fed him where he sleeps, far away from where he pees and poos. When he had an accident where he slept, I changed it IMMEDIATELY. He finally learned that poo and pee wasn't good but it took a while. He started holding the poo when we started taking him outside as soon as we woke up in the morning. Now, he finally pees and poos outside. I thought the day would never come but it finally worked and he never goes inside now.
So, keep him in a small area, big enough to play, sleep, eat and poo in (with a pee pad). Keep it clean. And Take him out first thing in the morning.
He'll be potty trained in no time.
You might not be able to crate him. I still won't crate mine because he used to go in it all the time- even if he was only in there an hour!

it sounds terrified. Sometimes it takes a puppy or dog a while to adjust. Changing foods can give your dog loose stools and make it have to go more often. Are you taking the dog out on a schedule and feeding on a schedule? Feed the same times everyday. That way your dog will establish a time frame each day when he does his business. Take him out as often as you can. Yelling will make him scared and more apt to have an accident. If you did not get your dog as a puppy, it will take longer to train. Be patient and kind. Puppy class is another great way to build confidence in a dog and make all kinds of training easier. They are for adult dogs too. PetSmart has them. Good Luck!

After years of dog training, I have found that some dogs are like people, they are just dirty! You may never be able to housebreak the dog. I had one dog like that and it was half Chihuahua and I had to give it to a farm because the dog could run free and not be confined to a house. No matter what I did not matter how small I made the crate, it always did its stuff in the crate! That's just a tough thing to come to the realization of. You just have to keep cleaning up after it or get rid of it.

I would take it to the vet. Dogs HATE going where they sleep so that is weird. Make sure you have NO blankets or toys or shirts, towels, ANYTHING in the krate with them. A bone is fine but no stuffed animals. When puppies are with their mom they sleep on a towel or news paper or whatever and they learn to go to the bathroom right there. So if your putting something even a bed that prob comes with the krate then they think its okay because thats what they did with their mom. Make sure your puppy can stand up and turn around in the crate. Thats how big it should be.

well dont YELL!!!!! at him. Just firmly say no. Take him outside every hour during the day on a leash in the backyard. Say Go Potty. If he doesnt go put him back in his kennel. Try again the next hour. Do this untill he goes. If he goes outside then reward him by not putting him in his kennel and play with him. Take him on a walk and do all that stuff that dogs enjoy.Good luck!

have you tried positive reinforcement? when it does go outside give it a treat and rub its belly, tell it how good it is. Do this everytime and eventually it will learn that when it goes potty outside it gets rewarded. Dogs are not human. They do not know why you are yelling at them, animals naturally do not have a spicific toilet they use, keep this in mind.
Also if it keeps on going to the bathroom in its cage are you taking it out to give it the chance to go the bathroom? maybe the neglect is on your part.
