I believe that the God of the Bible is a myth, even though I was raised in a family that believed the Bible. I came to my belief because I saw contradictions in what I was being taught at church that bothered me, so I started a process of considering different points of view, and looking for the one that made the most sense to me.

If you really want to understand how I came to my conclusion, you'll need to do something like I did. Do this. On one piece of paper, at the top write: "The God of the Old Testament exists, and the Old Testament is all true." On another piece of paper, at the top write: "The Old Testament is mythology, the God of the Old Testament is myth just like Zeus." Now on each piece of paper, draw a line down the middle, and on the left side try to list things that support the claim at the top, and on the right side, try to list things that contradict the claim.

I think if you do this in earnest, with an open mind, you'll find that there are a lot of reasons to support the claim that the Old Testament is myth. You have to be honest and try to treat both sides fairly. You probably want the result of the exercise to reinforce what you currently believe, but the exercise is only worth doing if you can be fair to both sides.

Note that I haven't said anything about a very interesting possibility. It is possible that the Old Testament is myth, but there is still a God who created the universe. I believe that may be true, and that such a God would not create a heaven/hell afterlife. I don't know this to be true, and I don't worry about whether it is true or not. Instead, I try to be an ethical person, to love my wife and daughter, to be a good neighbor and to treat everyone as I would wish to be treated, and to learn as much as I can while I have the chance. Its my belief that if there is a God, that is all that the God asks of me.

He is not the creator of all Heaven and Earth. There is no creator! Why is it easy to believe that this magical being created everything? You can't explain the beginning of creation, so you create God, because something cannot come from nothing, right? So, something created everything. God created everything. But tell me, what created God??? God has always been. ok. Why is it understandable to believe God has always been, but you cannot believe that every element that is in life has always been? Why can't you believe that all the things that make a sun, a planet, a human, have always been?? Just floating through space, combining with other elements, creating planets. Separating, exploding, floating, creating new planets, creating new life, creating new suns, exploding, floating, combining....

I use to be where your at now. I could never understand why people didnt even comprehend the possibility of a 'God'.
Let me ask you, How many Gods are really there? You may say only 1. Do you believe this to be true? Or do you KNOW it to be true.?
If you are anything like I use to be you probably answered yes to both questions.
Let me ask this. Is there a moon? Do you BELIEVE there is a moon or KNOW there is a moon?? You probably answered "KNOW there is a moon'. You see believing and knowing is different. You dont KNOW there is a 'God' or 'Gods'. see?? You only have a belief.
Believing means you are of the OPINION something is true.
Can you hear, see, feel, smell, taste this God? No , of course not. The same as you cannot hear, see, feel, smell nor taste the invisible pink unicorn sitting next to you right now.

To believe in God is to conform your ways. You're not free to do whatever you want. There's such a thing as morality. However, people like to dictate their own morality.

If you believe, there is consequences to your actions. You will beheld accountable. However, perhaps due to traumatic upbringing, or just trauma throughout their life, they become jaded. I think it comes from a self-loathing. The fact that they can simply be forgiven, or that others who do so much wrong can be forgiven, is not fair. They think there has to be a just judgement for them. Yet when you mention hell they think that is far too terrible a punishment. They want justice, but they don't want the justice there is. They want love, but they don't want the love there is.

Forgiveness and repentance is an easy concept. However, people would rather be god themself than have to answer to something greater than themselves. However, they are ultimately enslaved to some sort of idol/god whether they know it or not. Money, Marijuana, Alcohol, TV, politics, sex....etc.

Because there are plenty of rational explanations about how the universe and all within it came to be. And those explanations don't need a supernatural power to occur. You don't understand because you haven't devoted the time and effort to understand the scientific viewpoint. It takes a long time to learn, and we're still learning more and more with each passing day.

That said, if you'd rather just believe that God did everything, then that is your right. However, know that there are others that believe completely different things, and that you do NOT have the right to impose your beliefs on others. okay?

Why are their people who do beleive in God? Some people are convinced that God exists, and others are not. Theists have arguments for the existence of God while Atheist have arguments for the nonexistence of God. Theists have explanations for how the heavens and earth came into to being as do atheists. If both sides have arguments to support their premises, then it becomes a contest of who's arguments are the best. Some atheists have become convinced that their arguments for the nonexistence of God are better than the theist arguments for the existence of God, so they conclude that God doesn't exist.

Why do people believe in God? We have been told we were created by nature and we have been told that God created us also. I think people have the right to believe in what they think is more truthful. I went to a catholic school for 12 years and I still do not believe in God, I guess it just depends on your up bringing or way of life. I do not think people should be punished by religious people just because they do not believe in a God, that is not right at all. I am atheist and I know I will die, how would I know what happens when I do die, I am not dead yet. I do not think you are a fool for believing in God that is your choice so I do not think you should call others fools if they do not believe in God. Just my opinion but something to think about, we all live on one planet so shouldn't we all just try and get along no matter what religion we are.

i just have questions about the bible is all. It seems to have too many unanswered questions. Like where did dinosaurs come from? what about the planets? who make them? Can one person really magically create a planet? If he only created heaven and earth, what about the solar system? What about other religons that dont believe in the same god you do? are they wrong??

the bible was written by several different people over a very long period of time. Its like when you are in grade school and you play that whisper game where one person starts with the real sentence and by the last student its completely different from the beginning.

I believe in proof, and science provides that proof for me.

I hope you can understand why I feel the way i do.

First of all, if you "believe" or "have faith" then you do not need to have logic or proof. Many people feel they must have logic or evidence of some kind in order to trust that something is real or exists. Second, the Bible and all other holy books were written by people, published by people, and bought and sold by people. This is why many do not think they count as evidence or proof. These people have never experienced God directly, in any form. Since they need logic or proof, and they have never seen any proof of God, they are unable logically to believe in God.

Some people need physical proof to believe in something. As far as God's existence or not there just isn't any physical proof. We know dinosaurs existed, from fossils, and there are remains the show human evolving over the course of history. You can't claim the bible or other texts to be physical proof because man created these texts, and as we all know man is flawed. I can't prove or disprove the existence of a God. Good for you for finding something you believe in.
