Here is a multipart answer:

1.) Formatting is starting from scratch. You will undoubtedly install more programs, and the cycle will start over again.

2.) You can search google for the processes by name, and usually the results will be a description of the process.

3.) Windows Anti-Spyware, no Windows Defender, can help you find any spyware on your computer.

4.) The program "msconfig" can be used to set your startup programs. i would suggest doing plenty of research before you use this tool. It allows you to configure several options, but it could cause problems depending on the programs you are using.

5.) I have about 20 programs in my taskbar right now, and I don't have any performance problems. (On a laptop even.) It all depends on the programs you are running and the abilities of your computer. Any spyware or malicious programs can seriously impair your computers performance.

6.) If you still cant find your way, seek out a geek in your area.

I'm administrator of a vocational high school, who managed 3 computer rooms @ 40 computers for each room. I have set very strict rules. For example: Giving a limited account for students, install anti virus, anti spyware, etc. But the PCs run slow and slow every month.

Until I install a software like Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit (for Genuine Windows XP) or Faronics DeepFreeze.

I just need to disable that software if I want to install new softwares or update anti virus database. For regular usage, I always turn on that software.

no
first uninstall any programs you don't use
then you need to find what programs start when your computer starts up and disable the ones you don't use...
then you need to check your computer for viruses and spy ware....

search for these programs
Tuneup 2006
Ad Aware SE
AVG Free
SpyBot Search & Destroy

tuneup is a pretty cool program and you can use it to fix your start up as well as other problems, clean up unused files and other things you havent thought about. the system optimiser is a real great tool

ad aware finds spy ware and locks it down and delets it... finds all kinds of things on your machine that slows it down, especially naughty processes that download crap to your puter...

AVG Free is the best free antivirus out there finds stuff nortons and McKaffe miss

SpyBot search & destroy also sniffs out stuff the others miss and protects your computer from bad websites that download crap to your machine without you knowing...
be sure to imunize after you run a scan with it to block stuff...

you got a lot of work cut out for you... good luck...

Depends on what the processes are doing. On Windows there are usually some services running that you don't need, these can be disabled but only by someone who knows what he/she is doing. You could also have spyware, in which case you can try Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.com to clean up.

Try running only one App at a time. PC's are notorious for this. If you are on the web alot you should run a disk utilitiy like Norton once a week.

Formatting is always one of the best and also considered as the last option.
Try defragmentation, deleting cookies and temp files. increase the size of virtual memory and of course try to open as less application as possible at the same time.
