Hi, now that I'm finally going to be free to live a civilian life, me and my girl and moving in together, near her family in Minnesota, that's her dream, so we'll move there.

My problem, is that I'm going to miss warm weather, and my lovely ocean, so to keep myself sane year round, we're making a tropical room, where I'll put a TV and some game systems and stuff, to calm my nerves during those miserable winters.

I was wondering if anybody had any good ideas for colors, things to use for a full-blown tropical feel. I'm thinking Wicker wood furniture, but what else??

Look around for a tropical theme wall mural. Maybe with an ocean and sunset. Also...you can find some palm plants, and certain types of lighting will compliment the look.

Bamboo window shades, some type of seashell accents, a sand colored carpet.... As for the wicker furniture, warm colored cushions and throw pillows will really add to the tropical feel.

Tropical Room Ideas

wicker wood is good for furniture and if you can't findy any of that then just white furniture is good.
Some of my favorite tropical colors are pink, lime green, turquoisey/light blue, and a light banana yellow. You might want to leave out the pink since you're a guy, but those are all the colors that re in my tropical room. You might want to get a fake palm tree that has lights wrapped around it, I've seen these at Garden ridge. Maybe make a visit to the beach and find some shells and then casually scatter them about the room or put the really nice ones in a shadowbox and hang them on the wall.
:)

R.A.:
You mentioned that the warm weather and ocean is the focal mood you want to set. Try to build the room theme around what you miss.
A hammock would be soothing and if the ceiling allows, you could paint a sky on the ceiling. This isn't a hard task to do. There are books and wallpapers available. You could use sand so many ways in the room either in containers or in a sitting area. The warmth feeling could be masked by indirect light and using the lights that imitate the sun.
Make some accent items be in motion, like the wave lights or bubbles from an aquarium. You could also purchase a bubble tube or water wall fountain.
Accessories can include adriondac(spelling?) chairs and umbrellas with light reflecting off of them.
Hope these ideas help.

To start of with paint the walls lime green this will work as a good bass.
Now what i did was went through nature books and mags. the natural world is a good one. I pick out leaves that i liked then one paper drew them together, I only used one wall and painted the whole of it with leaves and branches.
on the next wall i let the leaves spill out on to it. On this same wall i painted a monkey on a branch which looked like he was peering through leaves.
I also painted on the same wall a bit higher up and further over a tropical bird with long tail feathers, this i found from a bird book.(pick the most tropical colorful one you can find.)
up the ceilings i had ivy round but not on all of it and again i found a bird in flight and had painted this on the ceiling.
Around the window i painted an anaconda snake which was on the window and always lying on a branch to one side of the window.
The 4th wall i couldn't really do allot cause i had furniture on this wall but placed trailing plants on the tops and around the rest of the room i and bigger plants on the floor ie. Small palms etc.
I hope this helps and have fun in your new room,
good luck.

Check wallpaper store for tropical mural, border for walls or a wall. Coffee that is more like a sand box with glass over top. Can add different things that remind you of the ocean, beach, home, etc. Heat lamp perhaps to give you that feeling of HEAT. If you're artistic, you could paint perhaps opposite walls in different shades of blues

Wicker furniture is good. Also you could take bamboo poles and use them for curtain rods. A tropical print drape or else bamboo shades are good. Throw plenty of color into your pillows. A blue, the color of water would make a good paint color with maybe some pictures of the water trimmed in bamboo frames.

Lighted palm trees and maybe a palm ceiling fan. They have bamboo looking bar furniture (Gilligan Look) in Seventh Avenue catalog. I would go with an array of sunset colors or even a murial of a beach sunset on a wall. Mount a couple tiki torches on a stable base and burn non smoking oil. You will find up north here, little shops that sell adirondack chairs. Take a couple of your favorite beach towels and either display them across your chairs or hang one on your wall. A beach ball? In novelty shops (At the mall of America in Minneapolis~ Spencer Gifts) will have a wave lava light and many other accessories you might find acceptable in your "Retreat Room" It sound like fun! Welcome to the U.S.!

To make your room more radiant, you can paint the walls in light colors and introduce dashes of color through the furniture, complements, and ornaments.
