I am heading to Los Angeles for a week, what are the best things to do and what are the best places to see. I want to have a good time, but I also want to see the landmark type things too. Also, what are some great restaurants.

First of all, make SURE you have a car! You can't get around L.A. with public transportation, and cabs would kill you.

Go to Hollywood, that's a day. Santa Monica is nice...beach, pleasure pier, 3rd Street Promenade. Make sure you drive around Palos Verdes Peninsula....gorgeous! Make a couple stops and climb down the cliffs to the secluded coves. Watch the sunset from down there...bring wine!

You might want to hit some of the theme parks, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Universal Studios, Magic Mountain....Pick one, they're all about the same experience, just a little different theme. Then again, maybe not......If you've seen one amusement park, you've seen 'em all.

The Aquarium of the Pacific should be worth a trip....Long Beach. While you are there, hit Shoreline Village and hop on the Queen Mary. You don't have to pay, just walk on like you know what you're doing. It's gorgeous, and you can just explore. There's a bar on the ship, with live music in the evenings, and a GREAT view of the Long Beach skyline across the water.

You might want to head up the local mountains for a picnic or a hike, too.....Will Rogers State Park is a good place, near West L.A.....Hikes with views, and easy to find.

The Getty Museum is awesome....the grounds are spectacular, and the art is top notch. It's a great way to spend a day, and it's like $7 to park, then FREE admission....even the food is reasonable!

Avoid downtown L.A., unless you are going to a show. The exception is Olvera Street....it's a historic district, very Mexican themed in a good way, and great food.

Have fun!

I liked going to the Griffith Park Observatory and walking to the top of Mount Hollywood just above the observatory at dusk so that when I reached the top it was dark. Mount Hollywood overlooks not only LA, but also the Valley to the East. So you are surrounded by the lights of the city that shimmer. One of the highlights of my life. Be prepared for a long walk though. I think it took about 45 minutes to walk up to the top from the observatory parking lot.
