I live in a town where the Air Raid siren is sounded 1x a month and is now called the Tornado warning. Our dept. of Public Safety ( cops and fire) total 25 including administration. The police station(1) closes at 6pm daily and is closed on weekends. The Sheriff's Posse takes over. Also the State Troopers. There is a whole bunch of volunteer firefighters. There is a college here so the campus cops help out too. We have 5 traffic lights and 3 mail boxes. Most outgoing mail is picked up from your box by the carrier. NO public transportation. I love it here.

I currently live in a small town that has a volunteer fire dept and have also lived in other area with them One such are had sirens in 4 different location as the area they covered was pretty big and they made sure that the entire area could hear the sirens in case of a tornado alert etc.

We used to have the air raid sirens to announce noon and call the firefighters to the fire house, but they got technologically saavy and bought scanners and two way radios. Our siren was on the water tower. Our town was maybe a square mile large.

Two of my brothers were in a volunteer fire comany. They loved it. There was a siren that would call them to the station in the event of a fire. The siren was at the station, but i think that it was the only one there was in town, but it was loud as hell.

Grew up 4 houses from Volunteer Fire Dept. with the sirens. Got to point that they did not even wake me up with the windows open. I do not know how firemen heard them. Many years ago.

In the town I live in the volunteer fire dept responded to a housefire. They didn't set the brake properly on the pumper truck and it rolled into the living room of another house. Nobody hurt in the crash, two hospitalized from the fire. True story.
