Microsoft Word is a word processing application from Microsoft. It was originally written by Richard Brodie for IBM PCs running DOS in 1983.

Excel first came out for Windows in 1987

The precursor to Excel was Lotus 1-2-3, and I think it came out in the early 80s. Word Perfect was the dominant word processor for DOS until Microsoft Word, which I think was offered with the first versions of Windows.

I switched to Word and Excel when I bought a 80386 computer with Windows 3.0 in 1989.

Prior to that I used Lotus 1-2-3 for spread sheets, and Word Perfect for word processing. Both of these were DOS programs. I thought the new Windows programs were pretty neat. I've been using them ever since.

They've been around since at least 1984. I remember selling the first Mac version of both programs that year. So we're still talking MS-DOS for the PC version.

I would say either 1988 or 1989. I remember using the first Excel and Word. Looking back, I wonder how I got anything to work on those. LOL!!!
