The Russo-German pact was a secret at the time. Churchill's thinking was: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

I get your headline question, but the details part confuses me....
The Russians WERE invading from the east, and the Germans WERE invading from the west, but so what? They were fighting each other! I think the UK wanted to get involved, but they waited until their toes got stomped on when the Germans started dropping bombs..That made it OK.
The declaration of war is not something to be taken lightly.
Hell...the USA didn't get officially involved with the war until 1941 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. We also waited until someone royally pissed us off.
Most countries with sane leaders wait until there is a justifiable "personal" grievance before they go to war.Unfortunately this means that many innocent lives could be lost before someone intervenes (remember the holocaust? Who spoke for the Jews?).I wonder if history books will look at our current world situation the same way......

The Government of Great Britian didn't declare war until Sept.1939 because no one but the psycho Hitler wanted war. The Allies stood by as Germany took over pieces of land until they attacked Poland. France and Great Britian and the rest of Europe wanted peace so desperately they were ready to swallow some pride rather than lose any men. During the First World War France and Britian were bled white and the men in charge couldn't face another war even in the face of the growing monster in Germany. By the by the USSR did not go to war with the Axis until 1941.

Please, more thought on grammer; which "only" did you really mean?
Historically, England and then France declared war on Germany when Germany invaded Poland; Checkoslovakia was ceded by Chamberlain's "peace in our time" hoping to stop Hitler. It didn't work, of course.
Russia was a large trading partner with Germany and had a "deal" with Germany until Hitler thought he could blitkrieg to Moscoe and invaded - today, still, Russians and Germans have to work at it to be polite to each other.

England had already made the promise to Hitler when they signed the non-aggression pack with them and gave them Czechoslovakia. Hitler got the country given to him for the promise that if he invaded any other country, England would declare war against him. Hitler agreed but never intended to keep his promise. He then began the Blitzkrieg against Poland in 1939. The Soviet Union wasn't part of the pact.

Because Russia was not in the position to threaten England in 1939 while Germany was. Churchill knew he would need a lot of help to stop Hitler, so there was no need to alienate Russia, who eventually became England's ally after Hitler doublecrossed Stalin. It's best to fight one enemy at a time.

Chamberlain was an inept liberal who thought if you just did not do anything to pee off a dictator he would just leave you alone. Boy did he misunderstand crazy dictators...... it took conservative with balls to take the helm in England (Churchill) and with the help of the US they were luckily able to take a stand for what was right and made the world a better place for all of us...... a lot of people in the US today are falling into this same "hear no evil, see no evil.... and evil will not befall upon me" trap.

They had liberals too that spewed the same old 'let's just sit and talk with them' diatribe. Some things never change.
