Is it normal for stay at home moms feel like they are "missing out on something" in the world, by not having a career?

I am 27 years old.I have a bachelors degree, and I would like to obtain my masters.

Financially,my family does not need me to work .I love being at home with my children, but i often long for a career. However, at times I feel like this may be a case of me thinking "the grass is greener on the other side."

I completely understand. I have been on both sides of that fence. I do think when I was a stay at home mom with my daughter I thought working moms had it easier and then when I worked when my son was a baby I thought stay at home moms have it easier.
The best advice I can give you is to make sure you have time for you. Join a book club - join a gym - make sure you are giving yourself some alone time otherwise being a stay at home mom can become very tiresome. Go out with the girls - go take a class - one a semester - just do something for yourself.
Now that I have done both, I would much rather be home with my kids and raise them instead of having some daycare raise them for me..
Good luck!

Yeah it's definitely normal to feel like that. People do all the time. It's great that your family doesn't need you to work and that you love being with the kids but if you want to go back to study then go for it! You'll feel happier and more satisfied with your own life which will in turn benefit the whole family.

It is true that what we often dream of isn't as great in reality as the dream but you won't know if it's what you really want unless you try it. Maybe you just need a change from staying at home all the time with all the housework etc. As long as your study or career doesn't get in the way of your family or the time you spend with them (and it doesn't sound like you'd let that happen) then there's no reason why you shouldn't get out in the world.

that is a perfectly normal feeling. I often feel the same way. I love to teach but have made the decision to stay home with my babies and I am so happy but I am already planning to get my master's even if I don't do anything with it for many years. In the meantime, I volunteer at our Church (free daycare) and that gives me something to do besides be a mom. But there are lots of volunteer opportunities that you could to and you could always take your kids to a day care facility once or twice a week so that you can do something that is just about you. Good Luck.

Right now, you have a career- raising your children. It is a great career and a very important career. I know it seems like life will only last a short time, but even in 6 or 8 years, careers outside the home will still be available. You kids will only be young for a little while and this is the only time you will have to instill your values in your kids. Look at your kids right now and ask yourself who you think is more qualified to raise them than you? Raising your children so that they do become loving caring people who can create a positive impact on our society is far more important than a masters degree, right now. When they are grown and able to take care of themselves you will have the time to pursue you educational goals and they will be more up to date with your career pursuits.

Raise you kids now, or spend the rest of your life taking dare of them. Your job of raising your kids is very important, you just don't get paid in cash as proof. :)

My advice is to do what you think will make you happiest. If you can afford childcare and you don't have a problem with having your children go to a babysitter, go back to school now. If nothing else, volunteer a few hours a week before your kids are in school.

I went stir crazy when I was out of a job. I ended up going back to school because I couldn't find a job/career I enjoyed. Going back to school provided me with many options, plus made me feel like I was accomplishing something more.

If you don't do what you really want to do with your life, you will most likely end up regretting it down the road. At least then you won't have any "what ifs" to deal with later on.

Yep-- I have felt the same as you.
In fact, I just got a job today with the school district now that my kids are old enough (8,9,14)-- that way I can work, but I have the same hours and vacations as them.
I looked at it when they were really small as that being their time. They benefited from my having a degree, even if I didn't.
As they get older, your time will become yours again.
You can take master's classes part time, just for you and to give you a sense of self again.

It's normal. You need to make sure you have some adult interaction or you could go a little squirrely - you know. Why don't you take some evening classes to get started on your masters. One or two classes at a time still leaves you with the energy and home time for your family.

There isn't anything wrong with wanting a career or to fulfill your educational needs. Even if you don't need the money. Have you thought about going for your Masters Online? Many colleges today offer programs Online. If thats what you want, do it.

Believe me you are not missing anything. You just need something of your own.. a hobby or activity. Go get your masters if you want to. Kids deserve smart moms. Heaven's knows there a lot of kids out there being raised by moms who don't have a clue what they are doing.

Stay home with your children. They grow up fast, will be in
school, and then you can get your degree or pursue your
career. There is no more noble career than being a parent
and enjoying your babies as they grow up.
