My parents always let me have something I wanted when report card time came if I got a 4.0. I remember one year I got a perm....yeah, bad, I know. It doesn't have to be too expensive. Maybe a gift card to their favorite store? I think they also used to give me $10 for each A I got.

First try the whole realistic measure, so they understand why they should get better grades like their future and things like that...and then start taking away priveliges if they don't improve their grades [but if they ARE trying and its not working, that's a different story] and give incentives if they are, like a small shopping trip if they are a girl.

Get some shackles and chain and a stretch rack.......that would be a incentive not only for teenagers ... but for every one..

My view was completely different. I told my kids as long as they weren't in trouble -- and flunking was to be considered in trouble -- I did not care what grades they got. If they did not have enough pride or ambition to study without me fighting with them, well, the world needs manual laborers.

Those poor kids, especially in public schools, are trying to handle social pressures; insults from other kids; dealing in a sane way with their own fertility and sexuality; and trying to understand life, and I'm going to be in their face over meaningless grades?

Grades do not correlate with success in life, and that is true all the way through medical school.

When my daughter was in middle school, a classmate committed suicide. I asked her if that poor girl was bugged about grades by her parents. She said, yes, at one point the girl got a C and was frantically forging a B so her parents would not shout at her. I wanted to cry for that poor girl.

And, while they worried about grades, they missed the fact that she wanted to die!

So, how did my kids do without me making their lives miserable over meaningless grades?

My eldest son is a research math professor in Ohio. (I was a blue collar worker in a factory.)

My youngest son just finished his first year in medical school.

My daughter is almost done with her second Master's Degree, delayed by the birth of her son three weeks ago. She might do better but is dyslexic.

Please listen to your kids and talk TO them much more than you pressure them for good grades.

I was smart but lazy. Money was a great incentive for me.

days off of school, no final exams, trips, free homework passes, a day where one can lie in a recliner or on a beanbag while the lesson is being taught, no extra homework, a day sitting at the teacher's desk--with drawers locked of course, a couple of free hall passes, free pizza for lunch, etc.

I personally believe that getting A's is not everything. Yes, it is important for getting into most colleges. But, he/she needs to LEARN at school, not just aim to get A's...that can be done w/o LEARNING the material. Which will come back to haunt them in their college carrier. You should probably just ask him/her to do their best.

Have the teen make their own list. They know what they would like to have and discuss it with them. Ask them what would be worth getting an "A" for. Of course you don't have to agree.
