I believe that all state boards of nursing require a criminal background check for nurses (if not they should). I think the reason why should be obvious to you. You are entrusted with people's lives every day and RN's are given a lot of autonomy. How many news stories have you read about nurse mercy killers killing old people, usually they kill multiple people before they get caught. If you've been convicted or murder, homicide, rape, pedophilia, the Board of Nursing would like to know ahead of time instead of after patient's lives have been endangered.

Then there's the drug issue. If you have a drug conviction for use and sale or illegal drugs or illegal use of prescription jobs, they don't want you working as an RN. Again, you have a lot of autonomy and access to large amounts of narcotics. Again, you've probably heard of nurses who were caught stealing drugs from the med cart or Pyxis, or nurses who gave their patients saline and stole their morphine, letting their patients writhe in pain so they can get high. So if you have a drug conviction, or have been convicted of theft, burglery or embezzlement, you may steal drugs for your own use or for resale to make money. The BON needs to know this.

However, if you have a youthful crime or misdemeanor for something they deem not serious such as petty theft or joyriding in a car as a teen, the BON may make an exception but you must disclose to them before you even bother applying for nursing school because you wouldn't want to get all the way through it and then have your application for a nursing license denied. All nurses must complete fingerprinting when they fill out their applications, I did mine through Live Scan and they were sent electronically. If you have a record, they will find it then so best to disclose ahead of time. Some employers also do a credit and personal reference check for the same reason - if you are irresponsible and desperate for cash, they may consider you a risk as well.

Wouldn't you want to know that the person that is caring for you didn't just get out a prison for murder...

And there are those sick people out there that are 'angels of death' the people that kill their patients silently..although some of those psychos can slip through the cracks..backgrounds checks might weed some of them out..HOPEFULLY....

But I do think some of the things they stop you from being a nurse are ridiculous..Like if you did something like 15 years prior that wasn't that bad and they won't give you your license..

Anyway.. I think all states have the background checks... I know Iowa does..or maybe it's just states that have four letters in them..lol

To make sure you are not a murderer or some other type of sicko. There have been some many instances where there were doctors or nurses who had some serious issues and ended up killing the patients just out of the pure pleasure of killing someone.
