Environmental reasons have been raised against a fence, but aren't illegals bad for the environment too?

Last year, 205,231 illegal immigrants were apprehended on Arizona border lands managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Land Management, according to Di Rosa.

Each year, an estimated 35 tons of marijuana pass through the Coronado National Memorial, east of Nogales, Ariz., the park service reports.

At Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument run by the National Park Service, superintendent Kathy Billings says her staff spends about 75% of their time on border issues. Her park rangers, along with U.S. Border Patrol agents, detained nearly 8,000 smugglers and illegal immigrants last year and seized 8 tons of marijuana. "

"Because of possible danger to visitors, Organ Pipe has closed 90 miles of roads that tourists once used to view scenery and wildlife. A 30-mile iron fence costing $18 million was finished earlier this month along the border to stem illegal vehicle traffic.

The Bureau of Land Management, which oversees land along 155 miles of the border, faces similar problems. From 2003 to 2005, the agency removed 700 abandoned cars and 250,000 pounds of trash in southern Arizona, BLM district manager Bill Civish told Congress in June.

In 2004, the Interior Department told the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, that between 1997 and 2000 the number of illegal immigrants detained on department lands within 100 miles of the border jumped from 512 to 113,380 and has continued to increase.

At Cabeza Prieta, the basic work of the refuge — protecting wildlife — has been compromised, Di Rosa says. The traffic is disrupting migration patterns and destroying habitat."

I hope the environmental study the Senate is conducting on the fence is looking at ALL impacts.

I read the article and was suprised with the numbers. I also read an article in our daily paper here in Texas that our Govenor has put Border Security on the front burner.

SECURE BORDERS ARE FANTASTIC

Border Security is FANTASTIC and should be conducted by Border Agents not our park rangers who are ill-equipped and untrained for the job.

Quick note: Did someone say "Alot of endangered species are getting killed by illegals?" Hmmm.....I didn't get that out of the article.

The only persons raising questions over the environmental effect of a fence are the illegals and their pro illegal friends,yet they leave tons of trash on their way to the US and no one questions the impact,bottom line is that,they are using every excuse in the book to favor their chances of crossing the border

They are indeed. They emit extrenuous odors and tend to expell fecal matter wherever they can. Many signs of "illegals" can be found in the small trailers they rent for about a month or two while they unload their cocaine shipments and sign up for welfare with the same names, effectively leaching every ounce of blood from our society. They're like animals and a disease. If we could genetically produce a tequilla or jalapeno that would effectively sterilize the whores of this species, our economy would boom.

Most americans seem much more trashy to me. We just keep ruining this land and blame it on others. This case is caused by immigration, I don't deny it. But look all over the U.S., our citizens our filthy pigs.

You're totally correct and good article - I think it would be better to risk the environment at the border and worry about the environment to the north of it.

There is actually an enormous amount of trash left in the illegal immigration corridors from immigrants. It measures in the tons.

Yes, they are TRASHING this area!!!!! I have been there myself, years ago, and it used to be a beautiful area!!!! But, now Illegals are DESTROYING the delicate layers of soil, they are trashing the habitat of endangered species!!!! A lot of the endangered species are being killed by the illegals!!!!

Build the damn fence, and build it high and deep and wide, with plenty of live security personnel around at all times till they learn how to go about becoming U.S. citizens LEGALLY, and leave all their sheeiiittttttttttttttttttttttt behind. God Bless you.
