The sin comes from Genesis 38: 7-10. The sin was so much pulling out, but not doing one's brotherly duties to a late brother.

Some debate this because of the story of "the sin of Onan" in the Judeo-Christian Bible. Some may consider it a sin. The Bible story however, just says God struck down the culprit in the tale that did this. It was a violation of Levarite marriage which was divine law. It was sometimes referred to as Onanism. Now it's considered "coitus interruptus".
It's probably a sin, but I cut and pasted a wikipedia source.

Christianity decided that sex that was not intended to lead to pregnancy and was simply for pleasure was a sin. The act of interrupting the sex act to preclude pregnancy was accepted as proof that the act of intercourse was entered into for pleasure and not procreation and therefore was a sin. Further the enjoyment of the sex act on any level was a sin and the practising of fellatio, cunnilingus, mutual masturbation or anal sex, in fact any act that could not lead to pregnancy but could lead to orgasm was a sin.

I know what you are referring to and in that context the reasoning is very hard to explain. In that time period if someones son died then it was the job of the second oldest son to carry on the family line through the first sons wife. In the case you are referring to, Judahs first son died and so his wife, Tamar, was given to the second son so that she could still preserve the family line because the blessing of the family was given to the eldest son. However the second son pulled out when he had intercourse with Tamar so that she could not conceive and so he could still have that pleasure. The fact is he basically treated Tamar like a prostitute, because he would use her for sex but not for the purpose of producing an heir, it was a very different time period with very different customs.

The Lord sees every seed as a potential life. If we spill his gift "on the ground" we insult God. Onan (the story where the issue comes up) was a man who married is late brothers wife. He was to impregnate her and give her a child in his brothers name, but he refused. Ultimately he died because he spilled his seed on the ground. He took the creation of life into his own hand and decided throw away a gift from God.

its a population thing... religions want more people born into them so they make their "followers" beleive that this is bad.. its not a sin though.. wasnt written in the 10 commandments so therefore its not a sin - however religions leaders tell their people it is so they can increase the numbers of their religion.. the more people you can start brainwashing at a young age - the better - right?

I don't think they're supposed to spill their seeds......Anyway, my pulling out story is called Amanda....She is now 18 and a true delight, although Christians call her very sinful. Does that count?

Because you're wasting seed. It's like masturbating, you're killing potential babies and that's considered by some to be a sin.

I don't think it should be a sin, however, I wouldn't recommend using it as a birth control method...You don't want any unpleasant surprises do you? ;-)
