Followed virus protection directions, too. Have removed and reinstalled twice.

try using an alternate system, like this website called www.meebo.com It's a free, no downloading needed site that has IM for Yahoo, AIM, MSN, GTalk and Jabber. Use that for a few days and then try going back to your normal messanger. Worked for me. Actually, now I use meebo. It's convenient if you also have more than 1 IM system!

open messenger
cancel out of any windows it pops up...
so you are now looking at the messenger bar with a sleepy face...
click on the word messenger
go to preferences
find connection in the list to the left
make sure it has the dot that says no proxies selected
and your connection type (dial up, dsl, t1) is selected properly
also your home country is selected
click apply and click ok
then click sign in...

Or if your connection uses a proxy then make sure the proxy is selected and the proxy address is correct... the port is usually 8080 depending

maybe yahoo IM is having problems again every once in awhile they will have down time and some people can't connect or sign in maybe wait and try it again a bit later or some time tomorrow

Try GAIM it's free and it works with yahoo!, msn, aim , etc.
