Jesus of Nazareth, without money and arms, conquered more millions than Alexander the Great, Caesar, Mohammed, and Napoleon; without science and learning, he shed more light on things human and divine than all philosophers and scholars combined; without the eloquence of school, he spoke such words of life as were never spoken before or since, and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator or poet; without writing a single line, he set more pens in motion, and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art, and songs of praise than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times. –Philip Schaff

This is a good question E because outside of the bible itself, there is no secular historical evidence of JC's existence. I'm not saying that he did not exist, but your question discusses him as an historical figure, and as such, we would expect to find chronicles of him and his feats by the historians of the day (given that such histories would have survived).

But also, keep in mind that it's been only 2000 or so years, which is not very long in the history of mankind. And keep in mind that JC is not the principal spiritual figure in the majority of the world. It's only in western culture, and it's influences, where that is true.

The truth is that the messenger is nowhere near as important as the message.

Jesus didnt exist. The evidence suggest it is a myth. legend. So he cannot be the most important figure in HISTORY. There was no such human. It was believers that done all the work. Good and Evil.
even if you took the premesis that there ever was a Jesus, it is still the followers that have caused so much pain and sufferering and joy throughout the countries they practice their religion.

No, who even knows if existed, he could have just been invented by constantine or some such roman figure (He is obviously based on Zarathushtra to some degree).

The most important figure in history, maybe this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_the_Conqueror

He took a country into an era of prosperity that eventaully conquered over a quarter of the world, also the man who brought feudalism to england, and effectively ended the viking age.

Our Lord is truly magnificent. His word has brought peace and civility unto a pagan and heartless world. Jesus, the son of God, brought about a new love for our neighbors. Jesus has brought so many changes into this world that we are now where we are because of him. Our desire to learn, explore, and love is a direct result of Jesus.

Our Lord sent his only begotten son unto this world to teach us humility and self sacrifice. These lessons alone makes him the most important figure in history.

Nah... Jesus was fictional. The most important ACTUAL person who ever existed was probably Charles Darwin... he figured out how we REALLY came to be here.
