Well, almost all drugs can affect the liver. The liver and the kidneys are the two organs responsible for detoxifying the blood. I am using the term "toxic" loosely. Drugs can strain the ability of the liver to detoxify the blood, which can cause liver damage. It is true that antifungal medications taken orally has a greater risk of causing damage to the liver than compare to aspirin or ibuprofen. But, they are relatively safe. You mentioned you have a fungal infection in your nails. Fungal infection of the skin can be treated with topical antifungal cream. However, there are two exceptions, infections involving hair follicles and infections to nail beds. Both of these exceptions require taken the medication orally rather than topically. The reason is simple, topical medication can not effective reach in to hair follicles and nail beds. In addition, there are certain drugs which you can not take while you are on the antifungal medication. For example, Claritin (allergy medication) can not be taken while on antifungal medication. As always, talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment. Also, inform your doctor if you experience any side effects from the medication.

Hi there It all depends on how long you have had the fungus nail infection for. If you have had it for a few weeks, then not a problem and easy to resolve. if you have had it for a while and it has spread to more than one toe, a lot more problematical and difficult to erradicate. First if it is only one one toe and very recent: make sure your feet are well dry after showering, make sure that you don't spread it to everyone as it is really contagious, especially in showers, swimming pools etc. One good way to avoid getting it is to wear flip flops, same goes for avoiding to spread it. After showering or bathing, take a clean nail file, and some Tea tree, and file the growth that is on the to of the nail away, but do this slowly, you don't want to file the whole nail off, that would be really painful!, then apply some tea tree, do this on a daily basis, and each time us a new nail file. Also keep your diet as free of yeast & sugary food as possible, as this is fungus food, you want to starve it, not nourrish it!! This works, I have used this method many times on self, relatives, friends & patients, which completely removed fungus on toe (usually starts on little toe btw). However if you have had it for a while, there are many ways herbal medicine can help. It all involve an internal treatment, wich may not taste good but is a lot kinder to your body & your liver than the orthodox medicines that are available for fungal nail. The treatment will last for a long time, as it is a fickle thing to get rid off. The herbs given would mostly be anti-fungal such as thuja, calendula, adding some bitter tonics to flush any toxins & help balance your liver especially if this is aggravetated by candida (ex of herbs are milk thistle, dandelion, artichoke), other herbs included may be nervines, adrenals etc, this all depends on your overall presenting complaint. Your should never self treat this. Go an see your local qualified herbalist, they will be able to make you up a prescriprion tailored to yourself and your condition, if you stick with it (but as I said it takes a while, the longer you have had it, the longer it will take, usually times it by 2, so say you have had it for 6 months, it will take 1 year...I know...OMG!, but true). if you stick to the prescription, it will eventually go away, I have seen this a lot. What ever you do always seek qualified help!

I already have liver damage, so when I was faced with fungus too I took some drastic steps but not the meds. I placed a drain stopper(plug), a box of salt, and a bag full of dried eucalyptus leaves next to my shower. Everytime I took a shower I put the plug in, dumped a half cup of salt and a half cup of the eucalyptus leaves and then took a long shower, allowing the water to soak my feet. I took a while....at least 6 months but it did work. Salt and eucalyptus are both anti-fungial. I tried to stay in the shower at least 10 minutes at a time. Also, always wear fresh socks and trade shoes everyday. Never wear the same shoes two days in a row. Spray your shoes with Lysol after each wearing.
Clean feet and shoes is the key to beating this fungus!
Good luck!

That would be correct.
They test liver function first before giving the pills, or at least they should.
It is a rare side effect, but one that must be taken in to consideration.

Yes, before you get the prescription, the dr should do a simple blood test, you should only get 6 weeks of medicine, then do another blood test and get the last 6 weeks. I've been on it twice now - about 10 years apart - and have not had any problems.

It is a rare side effect, but serious enough that it needs to be followed with blood tests.
My mom took Lamisil with no problems at all and it worked great for her.
