Bypass surgery is performed when a cardiac artery gets blocked and the cardiac surgeon reroutes the blood in that vessel by connecting a "new vessel piece" (a graft) around the block. A triple bypass is when 3 vessels are blocked so three new routes must be established.

This is often done after a heart attack or after a cardiac workup shows severe blockages.
