It depends largely on the other party, their culture and personal history. Generally, in American society, it is a sign of respect to remove all hats indoors, although this habit is progressively becoming extinct. In other societies, it is a sign of respect to keep hats on. I'm told this signifies humility and respect. If someone, makes an etiquette error, it is no big mistake, especially if the offender was not familiar with this formality. If some one was cruel to you in the guise of correcting you, then that was rude and uncalled for, meaning they were in the wrong. I hope I was helpful.

It's not just your college; males aren't supposed to wear a hat indoors. Watch some of those 30s and 40s movies and you might see what I mean.
If you're not happy, change to another school.

A hat should be taken off the minute you walk in ANY building. Its plain simple etiquette that most have seem to forgotten over time. Would your grandma let you wear a hat at the supper table, seriously doubt it.

Didn't your mother teach you any manners, at all? It is rude for a man to wear a hat indoors. Take your hat off when entering a building or a home.

Proper manners is to remove your hat (any kind of hat, not just because it's a baseball hat) when you are inside.
It's just proper etiquette like ... not eating with your mouth full, or not saying please/thank you.
