It is but a word to describe many things, just as love can mean many things. The essence is though a transgression of the Will of God whether that be through violation of a written command or anger toward another brother or person. It can take many forms but essentially it's violation of the bond between God and Man whereby man attempts to take authority from God and make his own decisions or actions.

Sin is an outdated concept. At its base, it is going against a list of rules, presumably dictated by some sky being.
However, morality doesn't really work like that. Good and bad are value judgements. And different points of view affect that. Besides, any fixed list of rules doesn't really apply to all situations.
Try using your own mind instead of following someone else's list.

Religious attempt at some form of morality. Some Christians would like you believe that you must be religious and believe in God to have morals, this of course is absurd. Take a look at Socrates; The Discovery of Ethics.

Filthy, dirty, beautiful - because Lucifer, God's chosen angel was the most beautiful, most strongest angel God had created until he turned evil. That is why we feel that sin is the easy way out of situations. It lies, and it is the easy way just not the right way. It is a disobediant act against God.

A transgression of divine Law.
True Christians live under Christ's Law, which does include guidelines on how to live and structure ourselves.
Most modern Christians chose to dismiss much of Christ's Law, laws that he had Paul put into writing.

A falling short of the mark. Gods law is the mark and either doing that which is forbidden or not doing what is commanded is falling short or sin.

To sin is to either believe or act in ways that anger God. In ways that he has said not to in the Bible.
