You kind of just have to test different foods out to see how it affects your body. Of course, don't drink a glass of milk right before going out to a dance club, but you can experiment a bit around the house to test your tolerances. For instance, I can eat yougurt and moderate amounts of cheese, but will probably get sick if I eat a whole bowl of ice cream. Personally, I've found the pills for lactose intolerance don't really work, but maybe you will have better luck than I have.
Also, you can find substitute foods. For example, I drink lots of soy milk. I'll also get the soy ice cream. It isn't quite as good as the real stuff, but it is a better deal than eating ice cream and getting sick. Try the Soy Delicious brand. You can get it at most health food stores.
I've also found that a good high fiber diet also helps. I take psyllium husk capsules to make sure I get enough insoluble fiber in my diet.
There are plenty of foods out there you can have, so don't worry too much on what you are missing.

Try cheeses.
Much of the lactose is removed during processing. Cheeses that have aged are also lower in lactose. Swiss, Cheddar, Colby and Parmesan are good choices.
Try ice cream or frozen yogurt.
The solid nature and fat content tend to slow the digestion process, making the lactose easier to tolerate. (Ice cream is a high-calorie/high-fat food, so treat yourself once in a while to this dairy product.)
Try yogurt.
Choose yogurt that specifies "active or live cultures" on the label. Active cultures help to digest some of the lactose, making it easier to tolerate.
Buy lactose-reduced milk. This milk has about 70 percent less lactose than regular milk. Look for other lactose-reduced products in the dairy case.
Drink small quantities of milk with other foods.
When milk is consumed with food, the digestion process is slowed and symptoms of lactose intolerance are less likely or less severe.

Some people are more sensitive than others. Milk is found in yes, yogurt, ice cream, cheese, and MANY bread products. Most likely the small amount in most bread foods won't upset you. Just get substitutes for dairy to include soymilk, or rice milk or goat milk, and avoid cheese and other dairy foods as much as you can. I prefer soymilk, it takes getting used to, but I've really learned to love it. I use the plain kind that is fortified with calcium, vitamin d, etc. to replace milk in my diet. The cheese is the hardest to avoid, especially when eating out.. just try to minimize the intake.. also, there is medicine (at grocery stores) you can take to help you digest milk products should you be unable to avoid them.

Talk to a dietitian, you can have your DR. refer you to one, or you can check with your local health department, they usually have one on staff for the wic program, and they usually see a lot of women and children that are lactose intolerant. People also confuse lactose intolerant with milk allergies. There is a difference.
Lactose intolerant is where people have trouble digesting foods with lactose in them.
milk allergies is where people are allergic to dairy products.
Here are some suggestions I found that might help depending on the severity of your lactose intolerance.
Drink milk in servings of one cup or less.
Try hard cheeses that are low in lactose, like cheddar.
Drink milk with a meal or with other foods.
Try yogurt with active cultures. Substitute lactose-reduced dairy products, such as nonfat, low-fat, and calcium-fortified milk, cottage cheese, yogurt, and ice cream, for regular dairy products.
Take lactase enzyme tablets before eating or with dairy products.
Add lactase enzyme drops to regular milk.
There are plenty of lactose free dairy products.

Trust me, you can eat anything you want...the thing to remember is that you must protect your stomach before you eat any diary products or other products that may cause you distress. To protect your stomach take Lactaid tablets before your first bite of dairy. There are even products that have Lactaid in them like milk. This is coming from someone who has been dealing with lactose intolerance since childhood.
