NPR had a segment called "Calling All Pets" in which pet care is often discussed with veterinary consult. A veterinarian discussed a similar incident with her dogs and discovered the miracle of Febreze. Skunk smell is a natural odor, after all. . . Give it a shot.

I'm not a vet but I heard that alot of tomato juice and the baking soda/hydrogen peroxide/dish soap works for getting the smell out. Skunks can carry rabies. Make sure your dog wasn't bitten by the skunk and has its rabies vaccinations current. One thing you could do is yell and make some noise before you let your dog out at night. Even if you don't smell a skunk there could be other animals like raccoons in your yard. Raccoons can be very vicious if provoked and can cause some pretty bad injuries even to larger dogs.

If your dog is scared, that is probably a good thing - maybe he'll avoid skunks from now on. As long as your dog has had its' rabies shots I wouldn't worry about the skunk, except for the smell. I'm not a vet, but we live on a ranch and there seems to be a larger than normal of skunks this year. Both of my dogs have "gotten skunked" this year, one of them, twice. I got the following recipes off the internet and the first one does work well...
Recipe #1:
1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap
Mix in a bucket (it will fizz).
Soak your dog's fur, but be careful not to get any in his eyes. Use a sponge to clean off his head and around his eyes. Knead solution into the fur and be sure to get every part of him with it. Rinse thoroughly
Other recipes from "Get That Skunk Smell Out of Your Dog!". About.com, follow:

Recipe #2:
1 cup of vinegar
1 cup hydrogen peroxide
1 cup of dish soap
Lather WELL, add water until a good thick coat of lather is worked up and let sit for 10 minutes. Rinse well, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar in 1 gallon of water to rinse and leave on.
Recipe #3:
1 pint hydrogen peroxide
2/3 cup baking soda
1 tablespoon of citrus-based liquid soap
I've tried tomato juice and it's only been a so-so result. It's kind of expensive too compared to the other recipes.

I am not a veterinarian; but I have heard that using rinsing with tomato juice will cut the smell. I hit a skunk once with my VW van. It was bad news. But, I mixed a bucket of tomato juice and water and wiped it down and rinsed it off and it seemed to help.
I hope this helps a bit.

For pets that have been sprayed, bathe the animal in a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (from drug store), 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and a teaspoon of liquid detergent. After 5 minutes rinse the animal with water. Repeat if necessary. The mixture must be used after mixing and will not work if it is stored for any length of time. DO NOT STORE IN A CLOSED CONTAINER - it releases oxygen gas so it could break the container. This mixture may bleach the pet's hair. I have heard of one black Labrador retriever that was chocolate colored after this treatment.

As I undertand it, a good wash with plenty of tomato juice will cut through the oil of the skunk musk. It may have something to do with the acidity of the tomato. Fortunately, I have never needed to try this remedy on my dogs.

Tomato juice will work. My cousins had hunting dogs growing up that were constantly sprayed by skunks and they used that.

I suggest baking soda and warm water but since this has already been tried.....I got nothing. But I am no vet. Maybe there is something special you can do.
