I don't think it is necessary to write thank you notes for sympathy cards, this is my opinion. If, at any time, that one could be allowed with not sending out thank you cards, this would be one of the top occasions...a time for mourning is just that, a time for mourning. Anyone with any couth sending out a sympathy card should not be expecting any thank you notes in return. Of course, when the person calls, or when you see them, it is good to let them know that you appreciated whatever words of encouragement they sent, or for thinking of you, etc. I think if you feel up to it-(sending out such notes)- it is fine, but certainly not a requirement.

No, not for a sympathy card. But if the card accompanied a floral arrangement or some other type of memorabilia, then yes a thank you card is in order.'

If anything If they have an email address I would send a note of thanks. of the next time you talk to them tell them thank you for the note. Its always nice to hear a thank you for when I send out cards to people. It shows that it was not a waste of time. How would you feel if you did not get one thank you for all the cards you got sending out to people?...huh!

No. If there was a funeral involved you write thank you's for the flowers or charitable donations made in the deceased persons name, but not for cards.

no because sympathy cards are not really "gifts". They're just communications that they're thinking about your family. say thank you in person, if you see them.

Certainly not- it is a written form of condolence while you are perceived to be grieving.
You would not be expected to say thank you to people who walk up to you at the funeral and offer the same condolences verbally.

Well, let's review.
Someone has gone out of his way to try to comfort you. Your response should be:
A. Ignore him. Maybe he'll go away.
B. What nerve! Now I have to say "thank you"!
C. Jot him a note saying, "Thanks for your kind words. -Mary."
