My lifemate has been sober for nearly 30 years now.... when I began dating him nearly 3 years ago, I pretty much stopped drinking - but NOT becauase he asked me to. I stopped because there was no longer any need for me to drink.

Drinking is, to some, a social pleasure. But to others, it can be a lifestyle. When drinking becomes a problem in your life, it's not just a matter of "quitting for your partner" - it's a decision that involves changing your life.

If your partner has a serious alcohol problem, just asking them to quit for you will possibly cause more conflict than it will resolve. If they're not ready to change their life, your begging will fall on deaf ears and possibly cause resentment.

Alcoholics that do quit, do so for many reasons, most of the time it's not because someone asks them to, and it's usually not because they think they'll be healthier for it. Generally, they will quit when they are in danger of losing everything precious to them, and even then it's often not reason enough.

Al-anon was a great help to me in understanding why people drink and what makes them want to stop. It may be helpful to you as well.

Good fortune in your journey.

I gave up the bottle many years ago. Do know that my partner, although she never witnessed me drinking has heard plenty of nasty stories and that she would not be around if I were to pick up the bottle again. On the other hand would I drink alcohol for my partner, no - and I have informed her of this and let her know that although I would almost anything in this world for her. Breaking my sobriety would not be one of the things I would do.

Yes, I rarely drink anymore. It sorta lost it's appeal when I got old enough to buy it legally.
