My dog went into heat a few days ago. I was wondering how long this last and if there are any tips for controling the 'mess'. Also I called the vet to set up an appt to have her fixed. (She is 8months old) I figured that I would have to wait until she wasn't in heat anymore but the vet said they could do it while she was in heat. Is this ok and will she still bleed after the surgery?

Hey there!

We just went thru this with our dog. Pain in the butt, isn't it? ;)

3 weeks is the heat (as all are saying)...bleeding about 7 days. Our vet suggested a month after she's done her heat.

What you can do to control the mess is to either keep her in a room with no carpet (ie: kitchen, with some kind of pads under her...like the house training pads)...OR to put her in her crate in the room where the family usually is (in order for her to not feel left out).

Make sure you DO NOT let her out on her own (even tied up)...and when you go out with her for her walks (don't go too far from home cuz of the crazy male non-neutered dogs out there) make sure you have protection for yourself in case a male dog decides he wants to mount her (the male dogs in heat can be aggressive!!)...whatever kind of protection you should choose, remember that the dog may bite you! Sorry to say but that's a good law suit for any dog owner (so, if you happen to injure the dog that bites you - tho try not to - , remember it's your right because you're protecting yourself)

Hope that helps!

PS there ARE doggie diapers/panties out there in stores, try looking for them if you're not willing to contain your dog in one specific area. Good luck! :)

They are in heat for 3 weeks, but the bleeding usually lasts 5-7 days. There is more bleeding if you have the spayed while in heat. If there are no boy dogs around, I would just wait about a month after her heat cycle and have it done then. She will not bleed after the surgery like she is doing now.

Individuals in the same breed may be faster or slower. It depends on the breed and also the individual female, how long they stay in heat. I have a type of dog where it is not unusual to start the discharge and still be going 21 later before it clears and/or she is ovulation. Other females in the same breed may start to clear on day 10 or 14.

You can get Seasonals or just fix up some tighty whities with kotex. I can vouch for the endurance and utility of these Seasonals

Personally, I'd prefer to wait til after a heat before spaying. If you have facilities to keep your female isolated from male dogs, then that's what I would do. (Don't just leave her in the yard, male dogs can scale 8 feet if they want! or tear out 20 feet of chainlink...).

One week coming in, one week bleeding, one week going out. She shouldn't bleed after you have her spayed. That should fix her right up.

one week coming in, one week in ,and one week going out. I would wait till she goes out before fixing her then she shouldn't ever bleed anymore.
