I've been taught in church that speaking in tongues is like a direct prayer line between you & God. It's like your own unique prayer language to talk to God with. Acts 2 in the Bible is a good referance. Hope that helps.

Experiencing the Holy Spirit & "talking in tongues" may not be the same thing according to the Bible. The Bible does tell us that the Spirit directs us toward Jesus. People who do not, don't have His Spirit. Try reading the Bible in a more modern day english than KJV. Try something like the New International Verson. Get a concordance & look up lots of verses that mention God's
Spirit. That will help you come to the truth.

Yes, I have. I have witnessed the speaking in tongues, which means speaking in different languages. But if you are speaking in tounges with people around then THERE MUST be a person who can interpret that person there. The bible is very clear on this. If you are saved through Jesus, you are not filled with the spirit right off. You must be baptized as a sign of obedience, then as you work for Jesus and read the word and have Jesus on your mind all the time then you are or will be filled with the spirit. Not everyone will get the gift of speaking in tongues. Some have the gift of healing, some the gift of teaching, some preaching. There are different gifts that you can get from God, But he take it away if you don't use it for him

There is no such thing as a Christian who has not been baptized with the Holy Spirit.
For the real story of speaking in tongues, read what really happened on the day of Pentecost, when there were people gathered together from all over the world...each of them heard the Apostles speaking in their own native "tongue"! The story is in Acts 2:1-12.
You ought to know, as well, that Pentecost has nothing to do with Christianity, as some claim, but it is a Jewish celebration that takes place fifty days after the Passover feast, to celebrate the giving of the law to Moses on Mt. Sinai. That is what all those people were really doing in Jerusalem, and was the perfect time for God to send His spirit to the people! How marvelous God's ways are!
For Jesus' take on these things, please read Matthew 24:24.
God bless you.

I can tell from what little info that you have given, that you are in the very same place that I was years ago. Please believe me, I would not tell you what I am about to tell you, or anyone else for that matter, if I wasen't positive about what I am telling you. I was told for years, that unless I spoke in tongues, or in other languages, that I had not been filled with the Holy Spirit. But I tell you with God as my witness, that you do not have to speak in tongues to prove that you have been filled with the Holy Spirit. People had me so confused for years, because they kept telling me that unless I spoke in other tongues, that I had not been filled with the Holy Spirit. This is nothing but hogwash! I was so confused; and I tried so hard, and begged God to fill me with his Holy Spirit for years. I thought that God must have something against me, and I continually asked God what I had done wrong, that He would not forgive me and fill me with his Holy Spirit. I never got an answer no matter how many times that I asked God. Finally, one day while I was sitting in my office at home; working at my desk; when all at once I just heard a voice speaking to me. I just knew without any doubt whatsoever, that it was Jesus speaking to me. And He has confirmed it to me time and time again. This is exactly what He told me: "Calvin, you have been filled with the Holy Spirit ever since the day that you were born again. The reason why I gave the disciples the ability to speak in tongues on the day of Pentecost, was because there were people there from all different nations. And if I had not of given the disciples the ability to speak in the other tongues, then it would not of been anything but a place of mass confusion. And if you ever have a need to speak in tongues, then I will give you the power to do so when the time comes." And I have never felt any unrest about the matter since that day; but have had perfect peace about the matter ever since. If God truly inspires a person to speak in other tongues, it is because there is a need to do so at the present time. The devil has so many fine Christian people deceived into believing that they have to speak in tongues as evidence of the Holy Spirit living in them. And if it is not of God, then it is nothing but noise, according to God's Word. Do not get all hung up about this matter, as I did. Rest assured, if you have ever sincerely asked Jesus to come into your heart by faith, and save your soul, then you can be certain that the Holy Spirit lives within you. If it will be of any help to you, I have written a Bible lesson on The Holy Spirit; which I will gladly send you upon request. I hope what I have been able to tell you will help you to be more confident that you have the Holy Spirit already, if you are a child of God. Just forget the speaking in tongues matter, and leave that part in the hands of God.

Speaking in Tongues:
You have a room and there are 10 people in this room from 10 different countries of the world.
A teacher comes into the room and speaks to the 10 people.
Each person hears the teacher in his language from the town he was raised in, and marvels that the others in the room can understand the teacher!
This will happen again soon, this is one who is filled with the holy Spirit!

I've heard some say that they have heard people babbling jibberishly and called it "talking in tongues". As I was taught to believe, talking in tongues means that when someone speaks, all who listen can understand no matter if they all speak different languages.
Why would God cause someone to ramble incoherently, God already knows the heart and mind of the believer and no words are necessary. Speech is for "man", not for God. If talking cannot be understood, it's just nonsense.

Yes, but we need to be experiencing the Holy Spirit every day of our lives, its not a one off occurance.
The gift of tongues is a spiritual language which God gives us.
God Bless You!

The best answer I can give you is from the bible. 1corinthians 14:2 and following talks about the different gifts that you have when you are filled with the holy spirit. 'for he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. Verse 4, He who speaks in tongues edifies himself,...The whole chapter talks about when it is appropriate to do it and why it is important to do it.Verse 14 says 'For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. Also Romans 8:26 says 'Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weakneses. for we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but The Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Hope this helped. I love the Holy Ghost...
