Democracy doesn't guarantee freedom. A true democracy would simply result in the Tyranny of the Majority. All it would take is for 50 percent + 1 of the population to decide that the remaining population should be slaves and that would be the law.. Fortunately we don't live in a true democracy as it was envisioned by Marx and is supported by both Democrats (who want to use a simple majority vote to force everyone to pay for abortions) and Republicans (who want to use a majority vote to force women to die of pregnancy) . We live in a Constitutional Republic in which certain Inalienable Rights are reserved for each individual.

The most heinous of tyrants is the will of the majority.
Any law that causes an injustice to just one person is an unjust law.
Democracy will fail when the masses learn they can vote themselves largess from the public purse.
Author(s) Unknown but written at the dawn of democracy.
These unknown authors had already seen the flaws in "true democracy" and the founders of the U.S.A. wrote the Constitution and Bill of Rights in an attempt to prevent these misuses of democracy. Unfortunately the US education system has failed miserably in the task of teaching about the reasons our founders specifically wanted to avoid a "true democracy" and guarantee absolute freedom of and from religion.

The premise is wrong, the US is not a democracy it is a republic. Recite the pledge of allegiance and pay attention to what it says,"and to the republic for which it stands"... Also see Article 4 section 4 of the US constitution.
Democracy does not protect any rights nor does it give anyone any freedom. Democracy means the majority rules - that means that the majority of 51 percent can do to the minority 49 percent any thing they wish.

Well, first of all, look at the Constitution. Learn some history, really. Why do you think some of those Amendments came about? Why do you think we have the right to bear arms according to the Constitution? Where do the checks and balances exist?
Now, let's get real. This is not a Democratic Republic. This is a Plutocratic Republic. Look up the definitions and and ask yourself when the last "poor" President was elected to office, and what President in recent history did not cater to the rich and powerful?
Now, take a look at our Bill of Rights and see how today's political climate is trespassing on our guranteed rights, freedoms and liberties.

A democracy is about the rights the people bestow on their gov. that is one reason that the founding fathers of USA found it so important to point out that the people had "inalienable rights" that the gov did not have the power to remove. The tyranny of the king was so harsh that they thought this a very important piece in the "Bill of Rights".
Actually, if you are writing a paper on this, you should be looking up your own info as that is the only way you will learn it. This is a subject that is well worth learning. Good Luck with your paper.

It allows us to remove those that legislate to remove those freedoms. Democracy allows for the citizenry to make the choice on degree of freedom through direct election of representatives - and also allows for the removal of Representatives through the recall. See 'The Wisconsin Idea' by Bob Lafollette. Great stuff there.

When the power is held by the people (democracy), the people can assert their freedoms.
When the power is held by the government (authoritarian fascism), the only freedoms people have are the ones the government is willing to grant them.

Democracy - shlemocracy.
All this politics talk is driving you mad.
Go home to your mother and eat a nice bowl soup.
She gave your father democracy once. She gave him a bit of freedom. And what did he do?
Yes, we all know what he did - and your mother will never forgive him!

Democracy doesn't necessarily equal freedom. Too many people think it does.
What it does is give authority to people to decide how to live their lives. If things go badly, then we can only blame ourselves.

If you watch only one conspiracy documentary ever, make it this one. This just might be the best introductory video out there. Understand that every claim made in this is fact, not opinion, no matter how wild it sounds. It's all easily verifiable through mainstream news archives and public documents.
