I have a flipper. It's sometimes called a partial as well. I had to have a tooth extracted. (not the 2 front ones, but the one right next to it). The flipper/partial I have looks kind of like a retainer. It is plastic, has 2 metal hooks (one on each side to go around my back teeth) to keep in place, & one acrylic 'tooth' to fit in the space where my tooth was removed. It's kind of like dentures in a way because I can take it out if I want to.

A partial can be called a flipper too. I had one. It was just for one missing tooth.

A flipper is a removable resin or acrylic partial that contains usually one to 4 teeth. It's usually is nonfunctional (not made for eating hard foods, ie. ice, nuts, hard to chew meats, etc.) meaning it just gives you a normal appearance to replace your missing teeth while in public until your final removable partial (probably made with a metal base) is inserted.

Basically, it's a temporary partial that's made completely out of acrylic. It will fill in the space of the missing tooth until the partial is ready, that way you don't have to walk around without a tooth.

Did your dentist say he wanted to put HIS flipper in your mouth?
