For me, I do own the Photoshop Pro Version -- and use it quite easily with the .raw photos I take with my Digital SLR to improve the end results of the photos (and correct minor blemishes -- like when dust settles on the lens while I am taking a shot).
I never bought the training CD -- wasn't a need. Did you by any chance get any documentation with the CD you purchased? That might help. The best experience in learning how to use this software though is playing with it over time -- and the use of the Digital SLR camera's photos give me lots of practice.
So I can say, it was a bit confusing at first, but to have a training CD -- I do not think there is a need.

Photoshop has all sorts of bells and whistles. Some are very basic, some complex. I am a photo hobbyist, and I taught myself how to use the tools that I need to use to do what I want to do, which is making the most out of my snapshots. The basic ones are simple once you understand the concepts behind them. For example, you can modify the size and resolution of an image to make it easier to send and view in E Mail. You can lighten dark images, and trim large images so that you showcase that amazing image you caught in the lower left hand corner. You can remove blemishes and damage to pictures. You can even play around with things like putting animal heads on humans or flying saucers in the sky. This kind of stuff is real easy.
When you start messing with the other tools, that's where you'll need some training.

not really. I find if you just play around with it then you will get the hang of it after awhile. A photoshop class will not hurt if one is available. Otherwise learn what you can from books and websites if you really want to become good at it. Good luck.

Check online for photoshop tutorials, there are a ton of them out there. It takes a lot of practice too to become really good with it.

It takes a while to understand the basic stuff; you can mess around with it and learn it by yourself or with a book. But to really understand it might take some time (like using other tools and layers...etc). I don't think it's hard; once you get used to it and know where everything is, it's pretty straightforward.

It has many great ( and not so great) features. My son who makes his living in Graphic Design tells me it is the best. It has so many features I wonder if I would ever discover and learn to use them all!

if you have a friend who is an art director, he/she could teach you the basics in a couple of days. if the training cd is not too expensive I would go ahead and buy it. BTW, version 5.0 is old!
