Ask them if they're planning on being around to see their grandkids. Let them know they aren't just killing themselves, they are killing you and anyone in the house (including pets) by their second had smoke. They can quit, they just need to have more will power and start being responsible parents. My grandfather smoked, since he was a teen, he died at 62 and was the most important person in my life. I've never quite gotten over him not being in my life. He had to have a lung removed because he had cancer. Then his other lung became cancerous. Maybe your parents need to see people in the hospital with smoking related diseases to encourage them.

So you won't get in trouble, let them read the responses.

you won't be able to force them into quitting for good, they are grown people and have to find that ability in themselves. you can, however, try to help them. given that they've tried to quit, they've obviously realised it's a good idea already, so that might make it easier for you. there is no point in trying to tell them to do anything, it simply won't work from child to parent, and it hardly works in any other relationship. instead you could have a chat with them over a cup of tea and tell them how concerned you are about them, and also how proud you are that they've tried to quit. then comes the proper helping bit. you might want to find out about ways to help them with the physical addiction, like nicotin patches or acupuncture, and suggest to them they check them out too, but maybe even more importantly they'll need help with the psychological dependency. the way it sounds to me, if they've tried to quit so often and never really succeeded, smoking obviously has some sort of a psychological function for them. in a lot of people, smoking or using other intoxicants is a stress repsonse, so you might be able to help them by finding out about other ways of dealing with stress and making them enjoyable for them. for instance, every time they want to light up they could instead put a quarter in a piggie bank and for the money they'll have saved at the end of the month they could do something nice together. don't pressure them because that'll make it even harder for them to quit and stay off the cigarettes. try to be positive and encouraging instead. also, leave the responsibility to them, you are the child and shouldn't have to deal with this. your only job is to let them know you are concerned and are there if they need help.

hey, im sorry i dont really know any ways but i kinda have the same problem. my mom has been a smoker for many years and ive grown up with it for my whole life. she tried to quit a couple of times but she just went right back. i keep telling her to quit she just goes "i am trying to quit" or "stop yelling at me because that makes me smoke more"...yea its really weird. but if you have any questions or anything im here for you to talk to.

Scaring them won't work... Get your doctor to put them both on Wellbutrin (or Zyban, same basic drug) because it REALLY cuts down your cravings. It can also help you lose weight, countering the weight gain effect that stopping smoking can have.

Or you can pretend you started smoking because of their role model and you can cough and hack and wheeze all day.

Did you know, every cigarette you smoke takes 7 minutes or something outrageous like that, off of your life?

I think that it's their choice, not yours. It their fault if they die of cancer. Even though they are your parents, let them choose what they want to do. I know I sound mean but oh well. That's life.
