Well, we're in Texas and you can spend as little or as much as you want. I haven't added it all up (I'm really kind of afraid to), but we probably spend $500-1000 per year for my two boys (11 & 6) combined total. We use the library a LOT for science and history, although this year, I've bought much more than I have in the past. And some books will last for several years (a good history encyclopedia and science encyclopedia).
It's pretty easy to get by with just library books for a couple of years, but then you'll need to add a math curriculum (these will run anywhere from $30-100 or more). If you go with only packaged curriculum (Bob Jones, A Beka) it will be much more expensive, as their texts cost about what a college text does (generally, $50-150 per subject). I use very little pre-packaged stuff (maybe one subject per year).
You can also find a lot of good-condition, used material on eBay, VegSource, and CraigsList (if there's one where you are). Our local support group has a used curriculum at the end of each school year (April/May).
Don't be surprised if you buy something only to find out that what everyone else said was the "BEST" program just does NOT work for you and/or your children. Just remember, if you can buy it on eBay, you can sell it there, too.
Best wishes!

I just started homeschooling this year, but I have really spent very little. I have much more than I will need I'm sure, but I went a little crazy. I got really lucky and found a great group called "Homescool Freecycle" and got several items from that for postage only. That group disappeared so I created another along the same lines. It is at the following link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FreeHomeschoolTools
I also hit the thrift stores and Half-priced Books stores. Unfortunately I missed the auction at the local school districts which would have been helpful for future years as well. I could have also offered them on the group to other homeschoolers. Come check out the group. It is a great bunch of homeschooling women and a few men as well. Remember, until you have actually seen the curiculum and know that it will work for you, I would suggest not buying it. You can look at another grade even and make sure that it is somehting that will work for you. Also, there are so many places where you can get free resources/worksheets/etc online. Also check out this other link where she has a whole curriculum set up with lesson plans: http://oldfashionededucation.com
Good luck and I hope this helps.

I did home schooling through Texas Tech ISD (Extended Studies) and it was about $150 a class and the books are all different prices, usually from $40 to $100 but the school is good so if you decide to do homeschool defienatly check it out.

It really just depends on how you want to do it. A curriculum? School online? etc... You can always just use the library (no cost). This year i haven't spent that much really considering i have 4 kids. maybe about $300 that's curriculum's, workbooks, accessories (pens, pencils, paper, etc..)
