they measure the fetus and based on averages decide how far along the baby is...that coupled with your date of your last menstrual period.....
but it can still be off by a week or so.....
and even if the conception date is right....babies can come two weeks early or two weeks late and be considered normal......

They are some what accurate but do keep in mind you can deliver two weeks before or two weeks after. due date. And as far as the ultrasound goes I have two children and they were both accurate when determining the sex of the baby.

They are pretty close My first child was 3 weeks early, my second I lost, my third was 2 weeks late my fourth and fith were right on because I had a c-section with them.

They are normally a week or so off. Wouldn't it be nice if they told you the exact date!
