i babysit an 8 year old who has a problem reading and refuses to allow any adult to help even his parents and instead of explaining what confuses him he cries or throws tantrums any advice for me. I really need help please

He needs to see the eye doctor. He may have dyslexia, or need glasses to see.
Dyslexia- predominately in children who are ADHD, but can effect most children under the age of ten. The letters and sometimes numbers they see are backwards.
His fits are because he feels "stupid" and wants to prove to others that he is not, by himself. (Not to say anyone said this, this is just how he is feeling. Which is very admirable, but not in this situation.)
My son had dyslexia, hooked on phonics has a program especially for this condition. Most of the time it clears on it's own, with age, but there are sometimes that constant attention to the matter is necessary and will be with him into adulthood.
Just let the parents know, that a trip to the eye doctor could benefit a lot.

I really don't have any advice, some others gave really great ideas. I just wanted to say that I commend you for caring so much about this boy. I think it's wondeful that you want to help him and are willing to be patient and find out what the root of the problem is. Lots of adults can't take care of their OWN children; and here you are, the babysitter, becoming very involved! GREAT JOB! I hope you are able to help this young man. GOOD LUCK!

So don't help him - read to him. Have a time just for reading, let him pick the book, and don't make him read. Wait until he wants to, but just read to him. He needs to find out that reading is fun, not work. It seems like he's having a lot of pressure on him to read and the fun has been taken out of it. At 8 years old, things need to be fun or he's not going to want to do it. So let your place be his safe place to fall and while reading to him, you'll probably do him a world of good.

Have you or the parents ever consider the possiblity of dislexia?...
The symptoms are of frustration because he can not read. The child needs a professional to evaluate his behaviour, not just a reading teacher. You are asking for help or advice, but this is not a professional conduct to solve that problem. Anyway, I hope this comment help you to see the problem from other point of view.

try and have a serious sit-down conversation with him. ask him: has throwing your tantrums REALLY helped you accomplish what it is you are looking to accomplish? (reword for an 8 year old to understand). Tell him: no one thinks you are stupid here. we just want to help you get to the level that you want to get to.
ALSO, THIS MIGHT WORK BETTER!!! get him books and magazines (YES magazines) that include topics of interest for him. Like cars, basketball, whatever he likes. this will get him more interested in reading the content. try this and see what happens. maybe he will be more apt to ask for help because he is actually interested in what he is trying to read. so it won't seem like work for him. if he REALLY wants to understand what is going on in the book/ magazine, his defenses will be lowered and he will swallow his pride...

Get him interested in a good book or magazine, have him just listen to you read a picture book and follow along the words with your finger as you read, he'll learn.

my son was the same way came to find out he need glass. he could not see probably so it was making him upset to where the school though he had a learning disability,since he has his glasses his doing alot better

there isn't anything you can do really, you're just the babysitter. his parents are the ones who have allowed him to do this, so they are the ones that need to fix it.
