i have a german shepard puppy that is almost one but she chews EVERYTHING! i leave her outside, she chews the garage. i leave her inside, she chews the blinds and even the walls. she chews every toy to pieces in a matter of days. please tell me how to make her stop. i know she's still a puppy and probably teething but this is a little extreme i think.

well my puppys are like that too. I get a packof tennis balls and they both chew them up in 2 minutes. What i do is always kinda hitt them gently and say No to them. It makes them annoyed and they'll eventually stop

It does sound like a teething issue, but also a behavior issue. She needs to be confined when you are unable to watch her closely. If you don't have one, get her a LARGE kennel and USE IT!! I am a Lab breeder, they are chewers too, so I know what I am talking about. Only let her out when you are around, until she stops ruining your house. Give her a little more freedom every time she behaves. Soon she'll learn that she may stay out if she doesn't chew everything up. Of course you can use the sprays too, but it sounds like you'd need to apply it to the whole house. DO provide her with GOOD chew toys that she can chew. I have a book on vet care written by an old retired vet. It's excellent. Try giving her a whole RAW chicken. Yes, dogs can eat raw bones, never cooked ones. If the chicken is frozen, all the better. She will chew for quite a while and have spotless teeth when she's finished. It's a lot cheaper than a cleaning from the vet and she'll get the satisfaction of chewing and a very healthy meat all at the same time.

My neighbor has a puppy with the same problem. I kept him for a week recently and bought him a really big rawhide bone(almost as big as the puppy) He chews & chews on that & leaves everything else alone. Try that. Just remember to pick up anything in his way like shoes, etc. Also, the puppy was into an old sock.

Get the spray or gel called Bitter Apple at the pet store. You just need to put a little on what she chews and she will stop. The Bitter Apple is harmless to the animals but the don't like the taste. It taste like green unripe apples, very bitter. Puppies are trying to lose their puppy teeth. If you have someone who wear nylons, take an old pair and make a ball out of them. As the puppy chews the ball, it helps to losen and pull the teeth. Also you normally will not find the teeth around the house as most puppies swallow them. it does not hurt them.

Did she say that even the chew bones or kong for tough chewers breaks?? So that means even the kong that answered here by other persons is useless.. I'm supporting the answer of using bitter apple.. I tried it in my puppies and its effective.. Making a home-made ball is much stronger than what you buy at stores... (Really no lying, If you made it seriously ^^)..

Hope your puppies will be discliplined too.. May it grow a tough, playful family-loving german shepard!

Bye

OOH, I can help you with this, because my shepherd mix had the exact problem! From what you're saying, your mistake is just scolding. The dog needs praise too. The reason she is chewing is stress, so she's chewing in secrecy. Start by keeping her inside and supervise. When you catch her chewing on something you don't want her chewing on, tap her on the nose and say "bad" never use "no" ["no" is a training tool and if the dog associates "no" negatively then you can't correct a dog with agility training, the heel command, or even just simple commands, for example, if you teach your dog to shake and roll over and your give the command "shake" and she rolls over, you need to say "no, shake" (note: you can only punish if you catch them in the act during actual training, this way you do not send your dog mixed signals. once you have broken her of this and the training is over and she chews something and you find out five hours later, because you have taught her what to do and what not to do, all you'll have to do is give her a stern look and she'll crouch low to the ground and walk away, it's pretty cool, actually!)] give her a doggy bone instead then praise her "good girl" excitedly. This is the replacement technique. Do this every time this way she will establish a positive association for chewing, not negative. Plus, even when you're done correcting her bad behavior, just keep doing it with all of her toys, it keeps her obedient and happy, and a happy dog is a good dog. Dogs are co-dependent animals, they want to please, so you have to give them a reason to please you. If all she hears is no no no no no no bad bad bad bad bad, where's the motivation not to chew on anything. She needs to chew, it's what dogs do. So let her chew and give her something you can aprove of this way it is a win win situation. GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN!

At one year, the dog is still a puppy. Puppies love to chew on things and thats normal but if it gets out of control you might want to get some help from a dog trainer. Every two weeks is enough as long as you listen to the trainer and teach the dog everything the tariner does while the trainer is not there.

Get your puppy a raw hide bone to chew , it will deterr the dog from chewing other things. It may take a little while, but hang in there. Also, if you catch your dog chewing something, take the raw hide away and confine the dog to a certain area. Do this in short spurts, and don't talk to the dog when it's being punished. He'll catch on once he understands that his raw hide will be gone, and he's put someplace where he can't chew and has no one to socialize with. Give him just raw hide.

my dogs were the same when they were pups, well they still are they are only a year old now! we got them these things called "bully sticks" its a long thin thing, and this part is gross - apparently it is made of a bull's willy. But, once we gave these things to our two, they didn't even know who we were!! The bully sticks do smell a bit but it's worth it to stop them chewing the stairs. It's extremely hard and takes them ages to chew...now our dogs also destroy everything we give them - they are pit bulls, but we always leave out a bunch of bones, rawhides and also, the best idea we found: a huge long (2 meters i think?)length of tough rope - my hubby brought it home from work, its proper boat rope and it relieves the dogs need to tear at material. It will leave bits of rope everywhere but hey, if it stops her chewing your house, its jus a little mess to clean up until shes out of her chewing stage! Good luck!

First of all it is SHEPHERD...I am a breeder of German Shepherds and they are EXTREMLY smart...You don't say how old the puppy is??? Teething can be very tiresome and they
do teeth up to a year of age..They also get into BAD HABITS
out of boredom...when NOT supervised the puppy should be in a
crate...that way you will NOT have to worry about the house
getting chewed up...get a knuckle bone from a butcher..give it
to the puppy raw...DO NOT COOK as cooked bones can and
will splinter and cause major problems.
German shepherds are working dogs and NEED a job to do...
get her into some type of training classes and spend more time with her

Get her a nyla bone .
Then get a spray bottle and mix red cayenne pepper and water .
Spray the area or the item that you don`t want chewed.
She will get the message .
Scold her for chewing the wrong thing and praise her for chewing her bone .Most pet stores sell the Nyla -bone .
I think they come in flavors now also.
You have to be dilligent and keep a close eye on her in order to train her .
Watch her especially around electrical cords .
They are usually fatal!
