Because the Koran is a pointedly violent book that promotes hatred of other religions. You should really read it for yourself. Here are just a few quotes to get you started.
2:228 "Women shall with justice have rights similar to those exercised against them, although men have a status above women. God is mighty and wise."
4:1 "If you fear that you cannot treat orphans with fairness, then you may marry other women who seem good to you; two, three, or four of them. But if you fear that you cannot maintain equality among them, marry only one or any slave-girls you may own."
4:10 "A male shall inherit twice as much as a female."
4:34 "Men have authority over women because God has made one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because God has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobediance, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them."
3:110 "Had the People of the Book accepted the Faith, it would surely have been better for them. Some are true believers, but most of them are evil-doers."
3:169: "Never think that those who were slain in the cause of God are dead."
5:70 "Unbelievers are those that say: 'God is the Messiah, the son of Mary.'...Unbelievers are those that say 'God is one of three.'"
8:59 "Let not the unbelievers think that they will ever get away. They have not the power to do so. Muster against them all the men and cavalry at your command."
4:56 "Those that deny Our revelations We will burn in fire. No sooner will their skins be consumed than we shall give them other skins , so that they may truly taste the scourge."
Mind you, I found these quotes in a matter of minutes, not hours of research or anything. The book is full of these type of messages - promoting violence, hatred, inflexibility, killing, intolerance, etc.

What is the true intent of Islam? To Rule the World.
Do we gain a true understanding of Islam from the moderates, or from the conservative Islamic countries? Neither. They are Just men in this world and are flawed as men are.
Why are we in the west called 'infidels' when Islamic countries are marked by authoritarian regimes and sectarian violence?
Infidels: is a non-believer in Islam. The penalties for non-belief is convert or be killed.
Sectarian: Are those whom are more restricted in the Islamic realm from participation in the world therefore willing to change the world to their viewpoint and ideas by any means including violence. They call it a Holy War.... A Jihad... Its just another word for Murder.

Be careful!
There are no Islamic countries in the World today.
Pakistan and Iran claim to Islamic Republics yet they follow a misunderstanding of the Quran, like all Muslim countries (Please note that I did not write Islamic but Muslim).
The Quran is Islamic, but Muslims today follow Hadith, which is not Ravelation but hear-say tradition of the Arabs. Hadith is not Islamic.
The Quran contains all that is necessary for an Islamic State but Muslim fear the Quran and Allah in so much that they refuse to perform the good deeds commanded in the Quran and go instead for the male-dominated teachings of Hadith.
Sects and sectarian violence are prohibited in the Quran and is proof of the Un-Islam of these countries.
Infidels are Disbelievers to Muslims just as Heathens are to Christians, and may be a case ot the pot telling the kettle his bottom is black, since both Christians and today's Muslims can be equals as Muslims have tainted their belief and the Quran with Christians and Jews and Jesus that are simply not present in the Quran that Muhammad received as Revelation.
Thanks for a good question that brings out the thoughts that serious non-Muslims think about Muslims.

The funny part is that the west is only called infidels by the west, lol! You can read some info on the topic here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aiq1MS8o3Sm5qZdcYx63l87sy6IX?qid=20060814095338AAcV5R9
To be truly honest, the BEST information and image you can get of Islam is to read Quran. The moderates do not follow pure Islam, the conservatives do not follow pure Islam, so whichever you choose to learn from, you will always come across an innovation or misinterpretation or something that will take away the purity of the religion.

Infidels??? That is a term used by the west themselves. There is no such thing as an "islamic country." All the leaders of those country with majority of people are Muslim have a very secular government, excluding Iran.
I would say read the Quran and see for yourself where the moderates and conservatives get their views. .

Read the Koran. The fundamentalists actually have it right. Non-Muslims are bad folks, according to their books. You can cherry-pick a moderate verse here and there, but by and large it is a hateful book (probably the only religious book more hateful and murderous than the Old Testament)
But don't take mine or anyone else's word for it. Here's a link with commentary. Read through it.

We are in a real war against Islam and the sooner we acknowledge it the sooner we can be thru with it. Islam is NOT a religion of peace. The evidence is splashed all over the streets and buildings after one of there wack jobs blows himself up.
