Barring a problem with your video card, it's probably a connectivity issue--either a bad cable or a bad port. The S-Video signal conveys the color information (chrominance) and the brightness (luminance) information separately along different wires, so if you're seeing a black-and-white image, that means the luminance signal is reaching your TV, but the chrominance isn't.

i sometimes get this-if you have checked all of the above answers and still no joy-try flicking through your a/v inputs on the remote-you might only be getting luminance only outputted through say "av1"-but get the full signal through "av3".
