I'd use a 5000 mAh size C, NiMH purchased at thomasdistributing, unless you need extremely high currents. (Model car and airplane hobbyists say that NiCd is better in this case.)

All of the existing hardware (chargers etc.) will work fine switching from NiCd to NiMH.
